Local NPHC Promotes National Health Insurance Conversation

NASSAU, Bahamas –Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council hosted a Town Meeting last evening, which for the first time brought various stakeholders of the National Health Insurance process together with the public to discuss important details and views. The standing room only event was held in the Harry C. Moore Library at the College of the Bahamas, January 19.

Harrison Lockhart, Council President and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. explained, “Our council which is the umbrella body for nine prominent Black Historical Greek Organizations (BGLO) in the world conceptualized the event because we saw a need for a joint conversation and noticed most of the national spokespersons for various positions were also affiliate members.”

Dr. Wesley Francis, President, The Medical Association of The Bahamas, (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.); Dr. Delon Brennen, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of The Bahamas and Project Manager, National Health Insurance (Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.); Ms. Felicia Knowles, President, The Bahamas Insurance Brokers Association (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.) and Dr. Duane Sands, Consultant Surgeon, Public Hospital Authority (Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.) were the event panelists and addressed questions and concerns from the public.

“Community service is one of the most important principles that drive NPHC member organizations. It was our duty to provide the public with an avenue to have candid discussions with representatives of varying views as it relates to National Health Insurance,” added NPHC Town Meeting Co-Chairman and NPHC Director of Public Relations Derek Smith.

Co-Chair of the event, Georgette Albury also added, “It was our hope and intention that the public left having the details needed to make informed decisions about National Health Insurance.”
