Nassau, Bahamas – At 17, she was the youngest in the pageant, but Miss Grand Bahama World Joanna Brown won over the judges with her maturity, grace, intelligence and charm to capture the 2009 Miss Bahamas World title.   The 6’ 0” high school graduate now begins preparations for the Miss World pageant, which will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in December of this year.

A large crowd came out to witness the pageant, to see which of the “Earth Angels” would emerge victorious.   In a tightly contested competition, Joanna did not disappoint her fans, as she appeared confident, calm, and regal during the competition.   She now begins intense preparations for the Miss World competition at the hands of international and local beauty experts, led by renown fashion designer and pageant coach Bobby Ackbarali.

Finishing second in this year’s pageant was the lovely Llatetra Laing, Miss Bahamas Experience. Llatetra captured the Miss Bahamas Tourism Queen title, as well as five special awards: Lady of Elegance; Miss Photogenic; Most Beautiful Complextion; Best in Evening Gown; Miss Popularity; and Sexy and Sophisticated Cover Girl award for most Swimsuit poster sales.   She will compete in the Miss Tourism Queen International pageant in China next year.   Third place went to Dashanique Poitier, Miss Davis Trucking who will represent the Bahamas in the next Miss Intercontinental pageant.   Rounding out the top five were Miss Sposabella Bridal, Formal and Evening Wear Devera Pinder and Miss Red Hot Gabrielle Major.

Kendra Wilkinson, Miss D. S. Lifestyles Inc., won the Top Model of the Bahamas title and will represent the country in the next Top Model of the World competition.   She also captured the Best in Swimsuit award. Other special award winners were: Miss Bahamas World Sportswoman - Michaela Ferguson, Miss Bella Donna; People’s Choice - Swanique Sawyer, Miss Harbour Island; Most Talented and Beauty with a Purpose – Devera Pinder, Miss Sposabella Bridal, Formal & Evening Wear; Miss Bahamas World Spirit Award – McChenier Johnson, Miss Colors Entertainment; and Miss Congeniality – Danielle Morley, Miss Exuma.

Held under the theme “Earth Angels”, the pageant was a dramatic affair that paid tribute to the work of the Bahamas National Trust, while encouraging its audience to conserve and preserve our natural resources.

The following is information on Miss Joanna Brown from www.MissBahama.net :

FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT MY HOMETOWN/COUNTRY
My favorite things about my island Grand Bahama would be The Garden of The Groves. I've loved it ever since I was a little girl; there are native animals and beautiful waterfalls, there is also a Chapel there where I would love to get married someday. It is a very popular tourist destination on my Island. Also, another favorite thing about my country would be our Native Dishes, like the infamous Conch Salad, our delectable Crab n' Rice, and my favorite - our Gauva Duff! Lastly, Junkanoo!!! The rush is invigorating and thrilling; in my opinion everyone should experience our annual Junkanoo Festival at least once. Junkanoo is one of the things that display the uniqueness of the Bahamian People!

LIFE'S AMBITITIONS
My Ambition in life is to become a successful and influential person. I am striving to become a model citizen and ambassador for my country. Whatever field that I venture into, I would like to impact the lives of others positively.

HOBBIES
My hobbies are public speaking, poetry writing, debating, singing and being actively involved in my church's youth ministry "Generation M.A.D"

MY GOALS IN LIFE
My primary goal is to strive for excellence in whatever I do. I am aspiring to become an Entrepreneur and a Physiologist. Through these professions and my leadership skills, I will help to develop self worth and confidence in the people that I come in contact with.

MY BEST ASSET IS
I would say that my best asset is my spirituality. I am confident that this is my best asset because it is through my spirituality that all of my other assets become visible, such as my confidence, my inner beauty and my unique personality just to name a few.

MY DAILY PHILOSOPHY IS
Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added unto me. I live by this scripture on a daily basis. This reminds me that once I put God first, anything that I set my mind to achieve will automatically be achieved.

THE MOVIE (AND/OR BOOK) THAT MOST INFLUENCED MY LIFE
The movie that most influenced me would be Seven Pounds by Will Smith. Through watching the movie, it shows how one can be so compassionate and caring for others that they would give more of themselves to help another. This movie coincides with one of the life goals that I have set for myself, which is to give more of myself to aid in the transformation of others.

WHO I WOULD LIKE TO MEET AND WHY
I would like to meet my grandparents and other relatives who are living in Haiti which is my family's homeland.

I AM MOTIVATED BY
I am motivated when I see people who struggled and endured hardship all of their lives, use those negative experiences and turn their lives around for good, instead of using it as a crutch. This helps me to know that regardless of what life may bring, we are always in control of our own destinies.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE THE JUDGES TO KNOW ABOUT ME IS
I am an honest and trust worthy person, who not only has outer beauty but also displays inner beauty. I would also like the judges to know that if chosen as the next Ms. Bahamas World, I would be not only honored, but I would carry out all of my duties diligently, effectively and gracefully. Finally, I would like the judges to know that "they can save a bunch of money on their car insurance by switching to Geico!" Did I mention that I also have a sense of humor!!!

MY COMMUNITY SERVICE/ACHIEVEMENTS ARE
I have been working at the YMCA assisting in organizing functions for the organization and I am a mentor for the After School Program for the youth of the community. Also, being bi-lingual I chose to work at the Teen Center to assist the Creole children of the community to learn how to speak and communicate in English.
