Nassau, The Bahamas – Today, the National Health Insurance (NHI) Secretariat marked an important milestone on the road to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) with the launch of Primary Care Provider registration.

With the launch of registration, physicians who are interested in providing Primary Care services under NHI Bahamas can sign up online at www.nhibahamas.gov.bs/providers. Registration consists of three simple steps: a self-assessment, an application and an on-site inspection.

“I am happy to report that many doctors have already expressed their interest to us and are excited to be a part of the successful implementation of NHI Bahamas,” said Peter Deveaux-Isaacs, Permanent Secretary, NHI Secretariat. “I encourage Primary Care Physicians to register under NHI Bahamas and to do so as soon as possible and be part of the history of this country.”

Registration for Primary Care Physicians is a critical milestone as we prepare to enter Phase 2 of NHI Bahamas – enrolment. Once enrolment begins, Bahamians from across the country will be able to select their doctor from the public or private sector. Over the course of the next month, Primary Care registration will expand to include lab, diagnostic imaging and pharmacy services.

“Primary Care Providers will play a key role in shaping a health care system that is modern, affordable and accessible,” said Dr. Delon Brennen, NHI Project Manager. “The initial discussions we’ve had with Primary Care Physicians have been positive and I’m pleased to say that many of them are looking forward to providing services under NHI Bahamas to patients in need.”

As we move forward with the implementation of NHI Bahamas, the NHI Secretariat continues to encourage all Bahamians to be “NHI Ready” for enrolment by registering for their NIB Smart Card.

All of the hard work being undertaken to make NHI Bahamas a reality for Bahamians in need is fundamental as we continue our journey towards establishing Universal Health Coverage here in The Bahamas.
