RBDF Officer Completes Caribbean Junior Command and Staff Course

Coral Harbour Base (RBDF) – Senior Lieutenant Shawn Adderley recently returned home upon successful completion of the Caribbean Junior Command and Staff Course (CJCSC), at the Jamaica Defence Force Base in Moneague, Jamaica. This self-development course is uniquely designed to prepare Junior Officers to perform junior and intermediate staff functions at the unit and force headquarters level, and imparts to them the ability to perform functions at sub-unit levels within the context of the force or the brigade.

The course encompassed a series of training methods comprising of four components to better equip each course participant to logically solve problems, make strategic decisions or recommendations and to also become effective communicators in writing and speaking. The initial part of the course focused strongly on general education studies, management, administrative staff training and communications based on the joint Service Publications Defence writing format. The second phase placed more emphasis on tactical training which was inclusive of operational/combat planning, infantry skills, specialized instruction in tactics and executing a variation of field exercises.

Additionally, course participants had the opportunity to engage in sporting activities such as basketball, volleyball and football. Senior Lieutenant Adderley was also successful in winning the 2016 Commandant’s Challenge Trophy. This is a two mile circuit that the course participants are encouraged to complete at their own pace for the duration of the program, with a minimum requirement of completing 100 miles. Lieutenant Adderley far exceeded the challenge, logging an impressive total of 472 miles.

“The Caribbean Junior Command and Staff Course has given me a better appreciation of regional security issues and the requirements of international law as it relates to armed conflicts. It has armed me with new tools and the capacity to put them to good use”, said Senior Lieutenant Adderley. “By successfully completing the course I am better equipped to execute in a wide gamut of areas including staff work, communication skills, problem solving skills, tactical acumen, command and leadership skills.’

The Caribbean Junior Command and Staff Course (CJCSC) commenced February 1 and concluded June 12, 2016. In attendance were a total of thirty-two participants from twelve countries including Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Columbia, the Dominican Republic Guatemala, Guyana, Jamaica, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago.

Senior Lieutenant Adderley has spent 26 years as a member of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, joining as a member of Entry 26 (Jan 8, 1990). He has served in numerous billets and has held a number of appointments. These areas include the Squadron Department, the Military Operations Platoon, the Commando Squadron, Defence Force Headquarters as Aide to Commander Defence Force and Staff Officer for Legal Affairs. He was also attached to the Office of the Attorney General as a criminal Prosecutor. He currently serves in the Administration Department as the Base First Lieutenant and Prosecutions Officer.

Senior Lieutenant Adderley was admitted to the Supreme Court of The Bahamas as a Council and Attornet-at-Law in October 2007. He obtained a Master of Laws Degree from the University Of London in the United Kingdom. Senior Lieutenant Adderley received and a Post Graduate Diploma of Laws.

A member of New Covenant Baptist church, he is married to Mrs. Indirah Adderley nee Dames and has two children Shadiya Hanna and Robert Almore.
