Coral Harbour Base, (RBDF) - As Hurricane Dorian travels through the Caribbean region, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force is making necessary preparations to assist with disaster mitigation, as well as disaster relief and recovery efforts.

Members of RBDF Senior Command and the Enlisted Corps were briefed on Wednesday past on Hurricane Preparedness by Commander Defence Force, Commodore Tellis Bethel; Captain Coral Harbour, Captain Adrian Chriswell; the Commander Operations, Commander Chappell Whyms, as well as by Senior Enlisted personnel.
Contingency plans are already underway in the event The Bahamas is affected by Dorian. Officer and Marines have secured their bases and their homes prior to leaving families and loved ones behind when deployed to affected areas.
Ten patrol craft will engage in a hurricane avoidance exercise with almost 200 officers and marines aboard. Depending on the path of the hurricane, RBDF vessels are rerouted to sea as precautionary means as part of the hurricane avoidance. After the storm passes by, these vessels will be on call to provide relief assistance to affected islands.
Here in the capital, an RBDF Senior Officer has been assigned to assist NEMA with coordinating relief and recovery efforts. Defence Force personnel are standing by to take up positions as Hurricane Shelter Managers for over 30 shelters.
Having secured their homes, RBDF Advanced Support Teams to be deployed as required to Family Islands ahead of the storm to assist local communities.
RBDF Teams are already assisting local authorities and communities in Grand Bahama, Abaco and Bimini, where they are stationed.
The Royal Bahamas Defence Force urges the general public to follow hurricane updates on ZNS Radio and TV news to make the necessary provisions to ensure their families are safe. All marine craft should remain properly secures until weather conditions are safe for boating activities.
