Robert Sands Appointed Chairman of Bahamas Hotel Industry Management Pension Fund

The Bahamas Hotel and Restaurants Employers’ Association (BHEA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert D. L. Sands as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bahamas Hotel Industry Management Pension Trust Fund, effective 1st April 2016. Mr Sands succeeds former Board Chairman J Barrie Farrington, CBE who served with distinction for seven years. The Bahamas Hotel Industry Management Pension Fund was formed in 1980 to secure retirement benefits for managerial employees in the Hotel and Allied Industries.
 
Mr Sands currently serves as Senior Vice President of Government and External Affairs at Baha Mar Ltd. He has had an outstanding career in the Hotel Industry having served as General Manager of Hotels in Nassau and in the Caribbean. In 1993, he received the coveted Cacique "Hotelier of the Year" Award for his outstanding contributions to the development of tourism in The Bahamas. In 1997, he was awarded the Bahamas Silver Jubilee Medal for Tourism.  Mr Sands also serves as President of The Bahamas Hotel and Restaurants Employer's Association (BHEA).
Mr Sands served as President of the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association for six (6) years and in subsequent years served as Chairman and Director of the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board.

Mr Sands also served the Bahamas Hotel Industry Management Pension Fund as a Trustee since 1988 and also serves as a Trustee of the Bahamas Hotel and Allied Industries Pension Trust. Other Trustees of the Management Fund include: Peter F Maguire, Ernest G Cambridge, Barbara V Hanna-Cox, Carlton D Russell, Angela Culmer-Hinsey, Francis “Ted” Adderley, Earle R Bethell and Vaughn Roberts. Michael C Reckley serves as a Trustee and Secretary to the Board. 

The Board also announced the appointment of Karen B Carey, Sr. Vice President at Atlantis Paradise Island to serve as a Trustee of the Fund.


The Bahamas Hotel Industry Management Pension Trust Fund was launched in1980. Today thirty-five (35) Hotel and Allied Employers participate in the Trust covering approximately four thousand active hotel executives, managers and supervisors in New Providence, Grand Bahama and the Family Islands.  Today some nine hundred (900) pensioners and beneficiaries are recipients of monthly benefits.  The Assets of the fund approximate some one hundred and forty (140) million dollars.
