Stage set for 2nd Annual Bahamas Press Club Media Awards; Meet the Nominees

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The stage has been set for the 2nd Annual Bahamas Press Club Media Awards in the Governor’s Ballroom at the British Colonial Hilton on Saturday, November 19, 2016 beginning at 7pm.

The Black Tie affair will be held under the Distinguished Patronage of Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
The Keynote Speaker is The Most Honourable P J Patterson, former Prime Minister of Jamaica. He will be introduced by the Rt Hon Perry Christie, Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, who will also bring remarks.

The Etienne Dupuch Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient is the Hon Calsey Johnson, Bahamas High Commissioner to Canada, former broadcast journalist and general manager of the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas
Last year on November 21, the first awards were held -The Pioneer Awards Ceremony - during which the trailblazers in the field of Journalism and Mass Communications were honoured.

They were: Mrs. Eileen Carron, Publisher/Editor of The Tribune who received the Lifetime Achievement Award; Mr. Kenneth Francis (posthumously) for contributions to The Nassau Guardian; Mr. Wendall Jones, CEO of Jones Communications Network for The Bahama Journal, Love 97 & JCN Television; Mr. Anthony Ferguson, Guardian Radio; The Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas (ZNS Radio & Television Network); Henry Saunders, MORE 95FM; and Silbert Mills of Abaco Radio.

This year, the Media Awards Ceremony is more inclusive in recognizing the work of media professionals. After officially launching the Awards in a press conference July 14, The Press Club sent out emails to members of the press and media houses in the country, encouraging them to enter their “Best work” in the nomination process. There is also a category for Best Website and Newspaper Design and Layout.

An independent panel of judges was appointed to judge the entries, which had to have been published and or aired between January 2016 to November 2016.

There are also entries for awards for The Best Website, and The Best Newspaper Design and Layout.

The Awards are named after the Late Sir Etienne Dupuch, Editor, The Tribune; The Late Leon Turnquest, former Sports Editor, The Nassau Guardian; The Late Cyril Stevenson, former editor, publisher and Head of Bahamas Information Services; The Late Kenneth Nathaniel Francis, former publisher The Nassau Guardian; Feature writer Leslie Higgs; and Bursell Bradshaw, former news photographer.

The 2016 Bahamas Press Club Media Awards are being sponsored by Platinum Sponsor BTC and Aliv, Gold Sponsor. A number of sponsored door prizes will be raffled.
