University of The Bahamas on Graduation Regalia
Mar 22, 2018 - 7:08:03 PM

Commencement is a time-honoured tradition and a sacred celebration of the most pivotal achievements of our University of The Bahamas (UB) students. Indeed, our faculty, staff and administrators are some of the most excited and proud cheerleaders of our graduands at this ceremony. They have actively contributed to their development and matriculation over the years and observing them reach the pinnacle of their academic journey at UB is a proud moment.

For over four decades this institution has observed the Commencement ceremony - and matters connected thereto - as a sacred rite of passage. In its pomp and circumstance, as well as in the donning of academic regalia, this ceremony is accorded with the highest degree of decorum and respect.

Recently, the 2018 Commencement Class was advised that the decoration of mortarboards worn at the ceremony is prohibited. The institution also advised that stoles are not approved graduation regalia and will also not be permitted. Each piece of academic apparel has its own distinct meaning and significance. In addition to caps, gowns and hoods, academic cords or items that are specifically awarded as a result of academic accomplishments are the only additional apparel that graduands are permitted to wear at Commencement.

Although a time of great celebration and excitement, Commencement is, foremost, a solemn academic occasion. Therefore, the standards of this distinguished ceremony must be maintained.
