The Government of The Bahamas will receive two-hundred thousand dollars (USD$200,000.00) from a technical assistance grant issued by the Inter-American Development Bank’s office based in New Providence.

The objective of the Technical Cooperation is to support the Government of The Bahamas’ efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the population affected by Hurricane Joaquin. IDB Country Representative, Florencia Attademo-Hirt stated: “As a development partner, the IDB stands ready to assist the country with the ongoing relief efforts and will collaborate with the government if there is need for further support.”

Hurricane Joaquin has caused significant damage to public infrastructure and private property in the affected islands and will significantly impact local economic activity. Reports indicate that the storm inflicted the most severe damage in the Central and Southeastern islands – particularly on Long Island, San Salvador, Rum Cay, Acklins Island, Crooked Island and Long Cay, Ragged Island and Exuma.

Based on the Government’s initial assessment of the most immediate needs, the Bank’s assistance will support Government efforts to provide the required relief to the affected populations in the hardest hit islands.
