In the aftermath of the devastating hurricanes that made landfall from Dominica to Puerto Rico, on February 19-23, U.S. exchange alumni representing 18 countries from the Caribbean and the United States participated in the Alumni in Action for Resilient Communities: Emergency Response and Disaster Preparedness Seminar. U.S. State Department alumni radio personality and human rights activist Louby Georges, and Senior Information Officer at Bahamas Information Services Lindsay Thompson were selected to represent The Bahamas at the regional conclave.
The seminar brought together exchange alumni from Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, The Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Curacao, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Maarten, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Puerto Rico to create an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to sustainable recovery and resiliency in the region.

This year marked the first Alumni Ties Seminar organized for U.S. and Caribbean participants, underscoring regional interconnectedness and the importance of strong partnerships, as outlined in the U.S. Government’s Caribbean2020 strategy. The U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago hosted the workshop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by World Learning.
Following the program, participants will be eligible to submit grant proposals for up to $4,000 for community projects focused on sustainable approaches to emergency preparedness and natural disaster recovery in their home countries.
