Undocumented Cuban and Haitian Nationals Apprehended in The Bahamas

Undocumented Cuban migrants onboard Defence Force patrol craft Her Majesty's Bahamian Ship Arthur Dion Hanna shortly after their arrival Thursday morning in New Providence. The migrants were apprehended in the southern Bahamas.

Coral Harbour Base, 08 SEPT - The Royal Bahamas Defence Force patrol craft, Her Majesty's Bahamian Ship Arthur Dion Hanna, under the command of Acting Lieutenant Commander Berne Wright, apprehended a total of 21 undocumented Cuban nationals in the southern and western Bahamas on two separate occasions within 24 hours.

Shortly after 11:00 am Tuesday morning, 4 Cuban nationals were found on Cay Lobos on the southern border of the Great Bahama Bank approximately 12 miles north of Cuba. The second group of undocumented Cuban nationals consisting of 17 persons were found on Anguilla Cay in the Cay Sal Bank area approximately 150 miles southeast of Key West Florida shortly after 7:00 am early Wednesday morning.

The Cubans (18 male and 13 females) were taken into custody by crew members of HMBS A.D. Hanna and were transported to New Providence for further processing and investigation by Immigration officials.

Also this evening, Defence Force Marines stationed in Marsh Harbour apprehended a number of undocumented Haitian nationals off Hope Town, Abaco, around 6 p.m. this evening. The Migrants were aboard an American type sailing vessel. The Marines are currently carrying out boarding procedures, and details of the arrest are forthcoming.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force remains committed to defending the territorial integrity of The Bahamas.

UPDATED SEPT 9: A total of 73 undocumented Haitian migrants consisting 58 males and 15 females were found on the American type sailing vessel yesterday evening off Hope Town, Abaco. A thorough search of the vessel was conducted in a joint effort between Police and Defence Force stationed in Abaco. The vessel was taken into Marsh Harbour and the migrants were handed over to Immigration for further processing.
