Nassau, Bahamas - Second place winners of the first U. S. Embassy sponsored Alternative Energy Competition, C.R. Walker High School, visited the Island School, Cape Eleuthera on Friday, February 26.  The group of five students was accompanied by their teachers, Ms. Turnquest and Mr. Graus and U.S. Embassy Commercial Specialist Anne Marie Bain.

The visit provided an overview of the Island School’s objectives to promote energy conservation and environmental protection.  The students experienced The Island Schools’ solar heating and water conservation methods and saw first-hand how the School recycles everyday items in order to sustain itself.  The students engaged in a practical workshop to determine the management, application and use of renewable resources, and how careful management of some resources is required in order to sustain society.

Overall the experience confirmed to the students that it is possible to conserve energy by changing everyday habits and that they can do their part to make this possible.

The competition was held in conjunction with The Bahamas Hotel Association and The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and was part of the November 12-14 Bahamas Energy Conference and Trade Show, and was sponsored by the Sheraton Nassau Beach Hotel.
