I saw Roger Ebert on Oprah this week. He has had
thyroid cancer and has lost his jaw and his ability to speak and eat.
It was very sad and also inspiring. Here he is the biggest movie
critic, known for his voice and his opinion and it is taken away from
him. When asked about how he looks, which is radically different then
he used to look, his face is slightly disfigured, he said, “no one is
perfect, I wish I had have learned his years and years ago“. He said he
is very happy.

Also this week on Oprah, Jessica Simpson was interviewed talking
about the horrible bashing she has taken because she gained a few
pounds, speaking of the “mommy jeans” issue of the tabloids, she said
she was extremely hurt by the criticism she received. She spoke about
how hard it is for her to have the pressure of having the perfect body,
and her own body image challenges...

I just completed the half marathon (Marathon Bahamas)
with my team, the Ripped Chix in Nassau on Valentines Day. It
was a first for 3 out of 5 of us and a first for the token male on our
team we call a “ Ripped Chuck”. Our team members came together
last spring when a seed was planted to participate in the Conchman Sprint
Triathlon in Freeport. With the exception of me, sports activities had
played a minor role in the lives of our team members and certainly none
had ever participated in a Triathlon.

When I came to Freeport nearly
a year ago I was looking to connect with like minded people and have
some fun too. I had no idea what to expect moving from my busy life
in Vancouver, and was completely open to any and all possibilities.
Since I am not working here in Freeport, I have some time on my hands
and it was up to me to make connections and find the fun for myself...

Why is Change so darn Difficult??

	Well it’s mid February and
if you made any New Years resolution, it might be starting to slip from
your memory. Or it is so stuck in your mind that you are beating
yourself up because you have not lived up to your commitment.
We make these resolutions because there is something we want to change,
adjust or try something new. But what happens? We have the best intentions,
we have great ideas, great passion at the time, and something happens
as the days go by.

	One thing that happens with
an idea is we pick something that is too big. The goal is too far away
and too large for us to reach it, and in a world of instant gratification
we want in a few weeks not a few months. We have to remember whatever
it is that we are wanting to change has been there for years, it does
not just transform in a week or two. And what is it that we are
really wanting from the change? Is it a fantasy of how we will feel
with the change or the things that we will get?

I was thinking about this question
as I was still trying to recover from my Apple laptop being stolen from
my suitcase traveling from Vancouver to Miami. I picked up my bag and
knew with that sinking feeling that my bag was too light, and sure enough
my lap top was gone! I was very upset. Then when doing a
workout with my friends in Freeport today, we put our extra shirts on
the side of the bushes where we were running back and forth and when
we returned 5 minutes later they were gone. The hard part was the it
was my NY City Marathon shirt, only available to anyone who actually
can run 26.2 miles in one day and trained for 6 months to do that.

I am still upset by the loss
of my laptop, as it has many personal things on it, including pictures
etc, and it will cost at least $1500 to replace, which I cannot do right
now...

As I was writing the title of this
article I was thinking, well of course we will have a Joyful Season,
isn’t that what all the songs are about? I happen to love Christmas
music, I think my love for Christmas music is always because I want
to feel that Joy, Peace and Magic that the songs are all about.

What is it that sometimes prevents
us from feeling these things during the holiday season and all year
round?

The holidays are a time to connect
with family and friends. It is a time of giving, celebration, sharing
food, forgiveness, and joy. That's quite a bit of pressure falling on
one day or even one month. No wonder we get stressed and start to dread
the very thing that we love. Children, however, seem to
be able to feel the joy and magic. What are the things that children
do that we sometimes forget or let go of?
