The Orthopaedic department at Health City Cayman Islands has proudly reached the landmark of over 100 surgeries since it opened its doors just over a year ago.

Dr Alwin Almeida, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon said the first surgery was undertaken on 5th June 2014 and involved a shoulder arthroscopic surgery.

“Since then we have had a wide range of cases from hip replacements, arthroscopic biopsy to multi-ligament reconstructions, and it is a proud moment for us to have achieved this milestone,” he said.

The Department of Orthopaedics provides both surgical and non-surgical orthopaedic and sports medicine treatment, offering a number of services including joint replacements and reconstruction, arthroscopic surgeries and deformity corrections.

In order to accommodate the growth of the department and provide best in class service and patient responsiveness, the department has recently added orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Niranjan, to its team.

“With nine years of experience in orthopaedic surgery, Dr Niranjan is a welcome asset to the Department of Orthopaedics,” Dr Almeida said. “With such highly skilled surgeons and staff, we are set to achieve even greater milestones and breakthroughs in medicine in the coming year.”

Dr Niranjan joins Health City from Hosmat Hospital in Bangalore, India, and specializes in arthroscopic sports medicine, surgeries and joint replacement of the hip and knee.

The department is also in the process of acquiring the latest technology in computer navigation equipment, which is similar to robotic surgeries. This will allow Health City surgeons to even more accurately track, analyse and monitor surgical procedures. The Orthopaedic service also now offers patient-specific knee-joint replacements, whereby a CT scan is done and a customised model of the knee and joint is developed with moulds to make joint replacements, specific to a particular patient.

“We are extremely excited about investing in our future and the future of medicine, with computer-assisted surgery and custom-made knee replacement options,” Dr Almeida said. “Commitment to quality care is our top priority here at Health City and with the new equipment; we will continue to honour that commitment.”
