Did you know that fifty percent of men over the age of 60 suffer from an enlarged prostate?

Luckily, there is a diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals that can keep your prostate healthy and lower the risk of acquiring an enlarged prostate. Making healthy and nutritious food choices is the best way to lower both your weight and your risk.

Sesame Seeds are known to be rich in zinc, which is a mineral that is essential to the health of the prostate. Men that have either prostate cancer or BHP (benign prostatic hyperplasia) have lower levels of zinc in their bodies.

Zinc that is found in foods are easier to absorb than zinc supplements. Snacking on sesame seeds as well as oysters, adzuki beans, pumpkin seeds and almonds will help increase zinc levels.

Salmon as mentioned in previous posts, is extremely rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are healthy fats that protect you from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. They also aid in the synthesis of prostaglandin.

According to a study published in the Alternative Medicine Review, fatty acids deficiency may lead to prostate problems. Walnuts, ground flax seeds, canola oil and kidney beans are just a few alternatives that can give you your omega-3s, if you are not a fan of fish.

Asian men are known for consuming more soy products, which in turn gives them a lesser risk of developing BPH than men from other nationalities. Soybean isoflavones have been linked to a lower risk for an enlarged prostate, according to a study published in The Prostate. Consuming more soy could possibly reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer as well. For other sources of soy you could look into low-fat soymilk, tempeh, roasted soybeans, soy yogurt, tofu and meat substitutes made with soy.

Bell peppers contain more Vitamin C than any other vegetable. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant that might play a role in fighting off BPH. Consuming one cup of raw bell peppers contain 195 percent of the daily recommended intake of Vitamin C. Other veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts are also great sources of Vitamin C.

Tomatoes and tomato products are the best sources of lycopene, which is the bright carotenoid that gives tomatoes its color. With the consumption of lycopene, there may be a lower risk of developing prostate cancer and blood levels of antigen, a protein associated with prostate inflammation and BPH.

You can also get this protein from watermelon, apricots, prink grapefruit, and papaya…YUM!

Lastly, avocadoes are extremely rich in beta-sitosterol, which is a plant sterol. Beta-sitosterol can help reduce the symptoms associated with BPH. It can also help strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation and pain as well. Pumpkin seeds, wheat germ, soybeans and pecans are among other foods rich in beta-sitosterol.

We know that was a lot to process, so if you’re looking for a much simpler option, SPT has your back!
