Repressed emotions can affect our mental energy and hope, which in turn can lead to health problems, such as high blood pressure or digestive disorders. With that being said, it is extremely important to recognize the impact that our emotions have on others, our bodies and even our relationships.

As we increase our awareness, it becomes easier to recognize our emotional triggers, feelings and attitudes towards our experiences, which will allow us to adjust our thoughts and responses.

Rethinking your comfort foods is a great way to fight off emotional stress as well. When stressful events occur, it causes our cortisol levels to rise, which causes food cravings. In women, those cravings tend to be strongest for carbs, especially sweet foods. The more sweets we consume, the worse our mood gets and if that isn’t bad enough, our cortisol levels trigger an enzyme in our visceral fat cells which causes many women to accumulate more belly fat…BIG NO NO!

So, when we say, “rethink your comfort foods”, we mean meals and snacks that will soothe and calm you so you’ll have the ability to conquer anything.

Asparagus is high in folate, which is essential for keeping your cool. You can have them steamed, added to salads or broiled until crisp…go ahead, eat as many as you’d like.

Avocados aren’t solely known for being creamy fruits, but for being stress-proof as well. They are rich in glutathione, which is a substance that specifically blocks intestinal absorption of certain fats that cause oxidative damage. They also contain, lutein, beta-carotene, vitamin E, plenty of B vitamins and more folate than any other fruit. It can also be considered a fat, so be sure to use portion control!

You can’t go wrong with the crunchy, salty, deliciousness of cashews. They are especially rich zinc, which is known to help with anxiety and depression. Our bodies have no way of storing zinc, so it’s very important that you get some everyday. Make cashews your go-to snack when you’re in the mood.

While green tea may contain caffeine, it also has an amino acid called theanine. Researchers say that in addition to protecting against cancers, this tea is a brain booster as well, enhancing your mental performance.

If you are interested in taking the fitness route, aerobic exercises including jogging, swimming, cycling, walking, gardening and even dancing has been proved to help reduce anxiety, depression and boost your mood.

But wait, SPT has one more option for you!
