The following is an interview with Anthony Addesa, MD, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Jupiter Medical Center in Florida:

1. Tell us what sets Jupiter Medical Center apart from other specialized clinics?

When you think of someone traveling to leading medical institutions in the United States, you may think about destinations like the Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General or Johns Hopkins. Those are certainly outstanding hospitals. What’s unique about Jupiter Medical Center is that we are leading the way in core measures for patient care and quality even when compared to these prestigious institutions. Additionally, we were among just nine hospitals in the country singled out by Consumer Reports for infection control and keeping patients safe from dangerous superbugs and bacteria. Finally, our physicians and technology truly are world-class. When you combine that with the fact that we’re located in Palm Beach County, Florida, just a short plane ride away from the Bahamas, I believe we’re an outstanding choice for anyone in the islands.

2. How long has Jupiter Medical been operating?

Jupiter Medical Center opened its doors in 1979. Award-winning physicians, world-class partnerships and innovative techniques and technology enable Jupiter Medical Center to provide a broad range of services with specialty concentrations in cardiology, oncology, imaging and orthopedics & spine care.

3. Who is the ideal patient for Jupiter Medical?

I think our ideal patient is an informed patient. Today, individuals can do research and choose where to have their care. We have many patients who travel to Jupiter Medical Center from the Bahamas, throughout the Caribbean and even from across Latin America. They’re cancer patients, people in need of sophisticated spine surgery, total joint replacement, detoxification from drugs and alcohol, or even those who require specialized diagnostic tests. They choose to come here because they’ve done their research and discovered that we have the specialists and the technology to provide the very best care.

4. Tell us about your staff and surgeons?

When choosing a physician, experience and training matter. Jupiter Medical Center is home to many experienced physicians - in a number of medical specialties - who offer expert care and compassion. Many of our doctors have been educated at renowned schools of medicine, fellowship-trained at Ivy League institutions and have a great depth of knowledge and skill. We also have a number of physicians who are bilingual. I speak five languages, including Spanish and Italian. Our international patients and their families find it comforting to be able to get care from physicians and staff who speak their language.

5. Why is Jupiter Medical ideal for Bahamian residents?

Deciding where to get your medical care is one of the most important decisions you will make, especially if it means traveling far from home. Jupiter Medical Center offers everything you need—decades of experience, world-class doctors, advanced technology and treatments, and a deep commitment to the comfort of every patient and their families.

6. What are some of your procedures you best are known for? On average how long does a patient remain in your care?

There are several ways in which Jupiter Medical Center is leading the way in offering the most advanced technology to treat cancer. We are the first and only institution in Florida to have the next generation CyberKnife® M6™—the most advanced nonsurgical tumor treatment available today. This technology enables us to offer hope to many patients diagnosed with inoperable tumors almost anywhere in the body. A major leap forward in cancer care, the Cyberknife M6 also significantly reduces treatment time and eliminates tumors in as little as one to five treatments. Patients are coming to us from far and wide for treatment on the Cyberknife M6.

We are also one of a handful of centers in the entire country to offer electron beam IntraOperative Radiation Therapy (e-IORT), a revolution in breast cancer treatment that enables treatment in a single day. In women with certain early-stage tumors, Jupiter Medical Center has the technology to provide a targeted radiation treatment in the operating room, right after the cancer is removed. This can eliminate the need for women to endure up to seven weeks of postoperative radiation. This is a treatment that eliminates tumors safely and effectively, and allows women to return almost immediately to their normal and active lives. In orthopedics and spine surgery, our doctors specialize in the latest minimally invasive approaches for joint resurfacing and replacement that reduce trauma and speed recovery.

Many of our most exciting advances, whether in oncology or orthopedics, are about providing the most effective treatment possible while reducing the time needed in the hospital and minimizing overall down-time for the patient.

7. Tell us about your doctor – patient relationship?  What can a patient expect pre and post operation?

Our physicians and our entire global medicine team is committed to providing personalized assistance and taking care of the details so patients who do travel here can focus their energy on getting well. We make sure the patient and their family members are informed and comfortable throughout the entire process. We even assist in ensuring the patient’s care continues without disruption after they’ve left Jupiter Medical Center. We’re happy to share information and medical records with the patient’s personal physician once they return home.

8. What options do you have in place in order for me to be able to afford your care? Do you have payment options?  What insurance do you carry?

Jupiter Medical Center participates in several international medical insurance plans and more are being added. In the event Jupiter Medical Center does not participate with your insurance, out of network benefits can often be negotiated. Cash pay pricing is available for all services and procedures. Financing through a third party is also an option.

9.  I’m not familiar with Jupiter, is it easy to get to? What about my family, where would my family stay if they were also in Florida to support my operation?

Located between Miami and Orlando, our South Florida location makes us easily accessible to people in the Bahamas or anywhere across the Caribbean. While it may seem stressful to travel abroad for medical care, our staff helps makes the trip as smooth and comfortable as possible.  Our global medicine team begins assisting even before you even land in Palm Beach County.

When you’re ready to make plans to visit Jupiter Medical Center, you’ll work with global medicine patient representatives who speak your language and understand your culture. They will personally coordinate your travel arrangements upon request, including flight, airport transfers, hotel reservations, and even emergency transport. They’ll also schedule all of your hospital, physician and diagnostic testing appointments.  During your stay in Palm Beach County, you’ll have access to our global medicine patient representatives, who are there to answer your questions and serve as your advocate.
