Nassau, Bahamas - Thirty-one students are fortunate to have been chosen to be a part of the Ministry of Tourism’s (MOT) Summer Employment Programme.

While the majority of these students will be in New Providence, several of them will be working in the Plantation, Florida and Outer Island offices.

The students attended an orientation session planned by the Human Resources Department to prepare the students for the programme at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, on Monday, July 7, 2014.

Senior Executive in Human Resources Kelly Stewart-Thurston explained that the orientation will cover an overview of the MOT; Tourism and the Bahamian economy; delivering quality customer service; dressing for success; general information about The Bahamas and preparing for the job.

Mrs. Stewart-Thurston said the purpose of the Summer Employment Programme is to sensitize students to the dynamic and far-reaching effect of tourism with the aim of moulding professional to be the next developers of The Bahamas through the industry.

“The objective is to create innovative learning, experiences that are designed to engage students’ participation, broaden their intellectual horizons, generate feedback that may be useful and important to the ministry’s operation.”

The summer programme targets high school, college and Outer Island Junior ministers.

Mrs. Stewart-Thurston said the students would be exposed to the ministry’s downtown Tourism Ambassador’s programme, “This programme is designed for tourism ambassador’s to interact with our visitors.”

During a City and Country Tour, the students will be exposed to places of interest in Nassau and will be given important dates to remember about The Bahamas and the ministry’s history.

Summer students will also be required to prepare a report, a detail of their summer experience on the job. The report should be type written and the due date is Tuesday, July 29.

The expected outcome of our summer programme will be to cultivate a talent pool for future recruitment purposes; to contribute to setting a solid foundation for career development of Bahamian students, positively influence students who are contemplating tourism and to create tourism advocates; Confirm our commitment to attracting the best and the brightest in any field that will benefit tourism.

Eleuthera native Taliah Cooper is the MOT’s Junior Minister and is one of the students participating in the program. When she won the title of Junior Minister she became the first Out Islander to capture the title.

Taliah said that she has always known that the tourism industry is important to the nation’s economy and cannot wait to learn about the various areas and departments that make up the MOT.
