Bahamas Junior Minister of Tourism Receives Grand Homecoming

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama Island- The Bahamas’ Junior Minister of Tourism, Gabriele Josephs of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School received a grand welcome as he returned to his hometown after claiming the title of Junior Minister for the Caribbean and Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) youth congress set to be held in Grenada next year.

Josephs, the first Bahamian to win the competition made history as he outperformed 14 other competitors from various Caribbean nations.

Josephs’ ability to articulate his ideas and the values of the Bahamian community could not go unnoticed during his presentation on the topic “Flow Experiences”.

With the assistance of Samantha Cartwright, Coordinator of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s Junior Minister Programme, Karenda Swain, Assistant Manager of Training, Grand Bahama, family and teachers Josephs was more than prepared to secure the win in Barbados.

Betty Bethel, Director Ministry of Tourism, Grand Bahama, described Josephs’ win as “great indicator of where Grand Bahama is poised to go. We’re about to take off and having Gabe come back to lead the way. It’s the youth; it’s all about the youth, so it’s amazing”.

Josephs’ victory came just a day after Bahamas Minister of Tourism Obediah Wilchombe was elected chairman and Director General Joy Jibrilu was named Chairman of the board of directors for the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

According to Bethel, the success in Barbados signified precisely how The Bahamas is still a leader in Caribbean region in regard to tourism.

Josephs’ accomplishment will not only allows him to shadow Minister Wilchcombe but also affords him the opportunity for him tell the story of The Bahamas and what it means to be an industry leader in the Caribbean.

Karenda Swain, Assistant Manager, Training, Grand Bahama, said that “He has encouraged people to choose Grand Bahama Island and the Bahama Islands as a destination of choice. We are absolutely proud of him we continue to work closely with the schools to encourage students to be a part of our tourism programme”.

Josephs, who is elated about his success said that “tourism is our number one industry and for our number one industry we need a number one mindset, this is a feeder program to sharpen minds of the youth, introduce them to tourism thoroughly and assimilate them into the industry from an early age”.
