Costumes to be judged on best application of indigenous material
NASSAU, The Bahamas - The Bahamas National Festival Commission (BNFC) would like to announce the costume judging for the best application of indigenous material for the Road Fever street party. Judging will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival launch event inside Da Cultural Village.
Road Fever is a signature event of Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival, which is simultaneously a world class music festival, an interactive cultural experience and an unforgettable street party. There are three prize categories for the Road Fever event: best application of indigenous material; best section costume; best overall group. The latter two categories are judged during the Road Fever event, which takes place on Saturday, May 7, 2016, during Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival.
The BNFC would like to assure the public that the only costumes allowed on the Road Fever route are those that conform to the rules and meet the standards of quality. From year-to-year, the BNFC will review and enforce the rules to ensure costumes always reflect a uniquely Bahamian type of carnival; one that all Bahamians can be proud of. We were successful at this in the inaugural year and intend to be so in the second year. Despite the concerns, we proved last year that Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival is a wholesome event for everyone to enjoy.
We are extremely pleased that many of the Road Fever companies are embracing the use of indigenous materials for costumes more and more even though most of the costumes remain in the typical style of Caribbean carnivals. The BNFC created the prize category for the best application of indigenous material for the purpose of pushing designers to create uniquely Bahamian styles that could overtime flood the Road Fever street party. We remain steadfast in our work to accomplish this goal, while also creating a marketable event that stimulates entrepreneurial activity for small businesses in the creative sector.
We invite the public to attend our free launch event on Saturday, March 5, 2016 inside Da Cultural Village, where they can view the Road Fever costumes and decide for themselves, which costumes represent the best application of indigenous material. We also invite the public to attend the Grand Bahama Carnival Kick Off from April 15-16, Taino Beach, Grand Bahama and the main event in Nassau from May 5-7, where Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival will deliver the perfect dose of music, culture and vibes.
