The Bahamas Film and Television Commission joined forces with the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), Film Florida and other partners to promote The Bahamas’ outstanding film locations at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the largest film festival in the Americas.

MIFF and Florida film commissioners held an industry event at SoHo House just blocks away from TIFF’s Entertainment District headquarters in the first week of the festival. More than 100 film buyers, distributors, filmmakers, and media representatives attended the event.

“The gathering was another opportunity to remind people working in the industry that The Bahamas has several islands that would give a spectacular look to a film,” said Clarence Rolle, general manager of the Bahamas Film Commission, who attended the mixer.

“TIFF is the most reputable film festival in the hemisphere, and we used this occasion and other events during the festival to also remind filmmakers how close we are to major film centers and how easy we make the process of working in The Bahamas.”

Other events taking place during TIFF included the Directors Guild of Canada’s International Directors gathering. The Commission also assisted filmmaker Kareem Mortimer in hosting his own event, which revealed investment details for his next feature film.

“We were fortunate to have met several filmmakers and actors at various stages of their careers,” Mr. Rolle said. “It is important to us to build relationships with everyone in the film industry. We hope to interest them in bringing projects to The Bahamas immediately. But possibilities may arise at some point in the future as well. The door is always open.”

The Bahamas also took part in TIFF’s various industry workshops, which highlighted today’s best practices and emerging trends in the film business. The Bahamas Film & Television Commission is a member of Film Florida, the marketing/promotions arm for the 10 independent film commission jurisdictions in the state of Florida. The Bahamas is the only country voted in to this privilege, as The Bahamas shares coastline boundaries in the Atlantic with Florida. Many Florida productions coming to The Bahamas use the country’s natural beauty to enhance their film, commercial and still photo shoots.
