YWCA fund-raiser attendees bidding on Bahamas straw handbag.

GEORGIA - A straw handbag from The Bahamas was
a "big hit" at the 2011 YWCA Open Your Purse fund-raiser in Atlanta,
Georgia recently. The fund-raiser is a silent auction featuring new
and used purses donated by public figures in the Atlanta metro area.
The Bahamas Consulate in Atlanta participated
in the event - in an effort to promote the best Bahamian straw works,
Consul General, Katherine Forbes-Smith donated a beautiful straw handbag
designed by Cacique Award recipient Dorothy Miller of Long Island.
Organizers said the Bahamas bag received the most bids; it featured
a plait design called Jacob's Ladder. The type of straw used for
the bag was dried sliver-top palm leaves, and its black accents were achieved
by smoking the leaves over a kerosene lamp. The purse also dazzled
patrons with its authentic goat skin on the front.
The fund-raiser is held each year to
support the YWCA's Women in Transition program, which helps abused women
and children to rebuild their lives. This year the YWCA Open Your
Purse event raised over $175,000.
