FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – Extreme Kayak Fishing has selected Grand Bahama Island as the site for the tournament in April 2014.  The Flamingo Bay Hotel & Marina will be the host resort. According to Earl Miller, General Manager Vertical Markets, Bahamas Tourist Office, “The combination of deep sea fishing and kayaking will further enhance Grand Bahama Island’s well-deserved reputation for nature based soft adventures.”

During the site visit, Saturday, March 16th, 2013, Extreme Kayak Fishing creator Joe Hector said “of all the islands, Grand Bahama was chosen for its reputation for fishing, combined with the ease of transferring the numerous kayaks from Pompano Beach, via Balearia Bahamas Express.” Based in Pompano Beach, FL (just north of Fort Lauderdale), the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament is expected to attract over 100 competitors.

Miller acknowledged that the Ministry of Tourism is always seeking out new destination activities and admitted his excitement when he was introduced to Mr. Hector and Extreme Kayak Fishing.

Ana Lockhart of Time Travel-Flamingo Bay, the resort’s representative in Florida, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the event.  “We hope that in addition to bringing in many extreme fishermen from Florida, Bahamians/residents will also be inclined to get involved with the sport.”  Flamingo Bay Hotel & Marina came on board as the host resort of the 2014 Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament in Grand Bahama, due to its suitable waterfront location and proximity to Port Lucaya Market Place.

Joe Hector grew up in a fishing family, participating in fishing competitions. As a college student in Florida he quickly became bored of fishing from the beaches and piers, and bought a kayak – because he could not afford to purchase a boat.  He caught a 30 lb mahi-mahi! Now, 4 years later, Extreme Kayak Fishing is establishing a third location for the tournament.  Other locations are Pompano Beach (of course), and Dania Beach, FL.
