FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - The Ministry of Tourism paid homage to retirees for a lifetime of service during a luncheon at Le Med Restaurant in Port Lucaya Marketplace on Thursday.

Those honoured, under the theme "People Who Served," were retired hoteliers, taxi drivers, Ministry of Tourism staff and straw vendors.

Director of Tourism, Betty Bethel said "The Ministry of Tourism thought it was fitting to culminate its Tourism Week, and 50 years of celebrating tourism, by honouring the trailblazers in our industry and those trailblazers are you."

She told the honourees that they are the ones "who set the foundation in the industry that we have here on Grand Bahama Island here today, and we appreciate you. We appreciate the fact that you left a legacy behind for us to continue on with."

Ms. Bethel said she hoped the Ministry would be able to continue to call on the retirees for their tips and expertise as the island continues to grow "to where every day the marketplace and the various tourism areas are bustling with tourists."

She thanked them on behalf of the Minister, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe, and the staff of the Ministry of Tourism for their contribution.

Sandra Russell, general manager at the Ministry of Tourism said, in celebrating National Tourism Week and the 50th Anniversary throughout the country, the idea was ‘to go down memory lane’: "Here," she said, "we have all of the forerunners and pioneers in our tourism industry who really made tourism what it is today on Grand Bahama. We have some 70 persons who have turned up, and we are here just to celebrate their contributions in recognition of Tourism Awareness Week throughout The Bahamas."
