Freeport, Grand Bahama – The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (BMOT) is in a state of readiness as Tropical Storm Erika moves toward The Islands of The Bahamas.

All hotels, resorts and marinas on Grand Bahama Island have activated their hurricane programs and are taking all necessary precautions to protect visitors and residents alike.

As of 11:00am today the Northern Bahamas remains on Tropical Storm Watch; which means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

The GB Airport Company advised that the Grand Bahama International Airport will remain open until further notice, and all scheduled and charter flights are arriving/departing as usual.
Bahamasair will depart Grand Bahama on Saturday, August 29th at 3:30pm. Their planes will seek shelter in Jamaica until further notice.

The Freeport Harbour Company advised that the harbor will remain open until further notice. The Grand Celebration and the Baleària Ferry Express are expected to continue operating regularly scheduled service. In addition, other cruise ships will be diverted to Grand Bahama from other ports of call being affected by TS Erika.

The overall objective of the Ministry’s hurricane preparedness plan is to ensure the safety and security of visitors to The Bahamas, the protection of the country's reputation and the securing of the Ministry's physical assets. To this end, BMOT’s crisis management team in Nassau and Freeport are closely monitoring the progress of TS Erika, and liaising with all relevant authorities.

Each Bahamas Tourist Office (BTO) is equipped with a satellite phone to keep in touch with the BMOT command center at the British Colonial Hilton in New Providence.

We will provide another update at 12 noon tomorrow, (Saturday, August 29th).
