The 2020 Junkanoo Summer Festival moves to cyberspace, taking the form of a dynamic digital competition and workshop that offers locals the chance to compete, and everyone, including our visitors, the opportunity to learn about one of the most authentic expressions of Bahamian culture.

Junkanoo Artisans lead the conversation as they promote the legacy of the “Greatest Show on Earth” in a 4-day online workshop starting July 27 and ending July 31. Speakers for this year’s festival workshop include such Junkanoo legends as Arlene Nash Ferguson, who will share on the rich heritage of the Junkanoo tradition; Chris Justilien, who will speak about  Junkanoo music; Carolyn Evans-Vogt will  showcase the art of dance choreography in Junkanoo, and last, but not least, Mr. Percy Vola Francis will demonstrate the fine art of costume construction and design. The workshop ends on a high note with a live stream of the Kalik “Who Are We” documentary.

Minister of Tourism and Aviation, the Honourable Dionisio D’Aguilar, is encouraging all Junkanoo enthusiasts and groups to take part in this year’s competition and workshop as it premiers as a digital initiative.

“It’s important to keep the Bahamian spirit alive during this time, and this competition and workshop will do just that. This initiative encourages our competitive nature, allowing Bahamians to showcase their talent, while learning from one another.”

The Junkanoo Summer Festival competition consists of three categories: bellers, drummers and choreographed dancers. Entering the competition requires three steps: first, create a video, then upload it to Bahamas.com. Finally, share your entry with family and friends and encourage them to vote, vote, vote! Each entry has the chance to win $1,000.00. Each group is encouraged to be as creative as possible for the chance to win.

Competition Runs: July 20 - August 2, 2020

Voting Begins: August 3 and continues through August 9, 2020

Send your short video, and the big winner could be you! Terms and conditions apply.  For complete details on the Junkanoo Summer Festival Competition, visit Bahamas.com/junkanoo-summer-2020.
