National Art Gallery Of The Bahamas: Located at the historic Villa Doyle, a newly restored 19th century mansion on West and West Hill streets. The museum houses the National Collection of Bahamian artworks including paintings, sculpture, works on paper, textiles, ceramics, photography and other mixed media works. Visiting hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10:00am to 4:00pm, Thursdays 10:00am to 6:00pm, closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays. Central Bank Art Exhibition:   Feature monthly art and cultural exhibits year round with a special exhibition of the works of their Annual Summer Workshop for high school students after the summer workshop. The Central Bank Art Gallery is located on the ground floor of the Bank, George Street and Trinity Place, one block South of down town Bay Street. Fish Fry:   Enjoy Bahamian seafood specialties such as fried fish, conch salad, conch fritters, crack conch and crack lobster in a casual atmosphere at Arawak Cay.   There is also a police station, a story telling porch for special events, an old Bahamian rock oven an open stage and an open grass area with seating for the audience where concerts and other productions are performed.   Open from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. daily.

 

Potters Cay :   This site is located on the Nassau side of Paradise Island under the Paradise Island eastern bridge. There are lively and colorful fruit vendors, fish vendors, the government’s Produce Exchange and café style stalls that offer conch salad and other Bahamian Dishes.   The local Mail Boats that transport freight, produce and passengers from the Bahamian Out Islands also board and disembark passengers and freight at the far western and eastern sides of the dock. Potters Cay is open every day 6:00am to 11:00pm with some of the stalls closed on Sundays.   A police station and a Dock Master office are located at the Eastern side of the dock. The Retreat Gardens & home of The Bahamas National Trust: The Retreat is the home of over 170 rare and exotic palms with collections of indigenous hardwoods such as Mahogany (or Maderia) and Cedar that were used for generations by local boat builders but are scarce today. There are bright local flowers along the walkways that attract a wide variety of birds making it a popular bird watching location.   The 11-acre Retreat Gardens is opened to the general public for guided tours for a fee, picnics, private functions as well as the Trust annual functions that are held in March, October and November. Walking Tours: Tours start at Festival Place on Prince George Dock, near downtown Nassau, Monday to Saturday.   10:00 a.m. an 2:00 p.m. - by appointment only.   Tours last 60 minutes and cost $10.00 per person. Tel. (242) 323-3182 or 323-3183.

People-To-People Tea Party:   This event takes place the last Friday in the months from January to May, October and November. The Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation : This museum is located at Venue House, next to the Straw Market on Bay Street, a former 18th & 19th-century slave auction site.   This museum has photographs, artifacts and replicas depicting the history of slavery and emancipation in The Bahamas. The museum is open to the public 9:30 am to 4:30 pm    daily except Sundays and Thursdays. Nassau Public Library, Museum & Reading Room :   This former 18th century jail is located on Shirley Street near the courts and other Government buildings.   It is an interesting octagonal shaped building that houses a small collection of old books, photographs, artifacts and historical documents. The Public Library offers internet services for adults at $5.00 per hour, students $2.50 per hour. Balcony House Museum:   This quaint 18th century building is named for its overhanging balcony and is thought to be the oldest wooden house of its kind in The Bahamas. The Central Bank of The Bahamas purchased the building in 1985 and restored it to its original state with period furnishing. The College Of The Bahamas (COB): This institution is the main center for higher learning in The Bahamas with the main campus located at Oaks Field, Nasssau, New Providence.   Their Nasssau campus is a center of learning as well as top notch entertainment and events presented by the different Schools. The School of Culinary & Hospitality Management puts on their annual Culinary Show, and the School of Communication and Creative Arts have their annual Concerts and Art Exhibitions.   For information please Tel. The Department of Archives:   This Government Department is located Mackey Street near Shirley Street in the back of the Eastern Public Library.   The Archives have records and archives of the government, the Anglican, Methodist and St. Andrews Presbyterian churches as well as private collections. There is a collection of historical documents dating back as far as 1700, a photographic collection, oral history collection, maps, plans, prints and Lucayan Indian artifacts. Bacardi & Company Ltd.: Bacardi Rum is totally manufactured in The Bahamas.   The Bacardi Company offers complimentary tours of the Bacardi Plant and drink sampling during their tours. Tours are Mondays - Thursdays 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Fridays, 11.00 a.m. (weather permitting). Rugby Matches :   Enjoy rugby games from the first week in October and runs until     April of the following year, with a short break during the Christmas Holidays. Soccer Matches: The Bahamas Football Association: conduct different soccer leagues that play games throughout the year.   The seniors play from January to June at the Tommy Robinson Sports Center and C I Gibson School Grounds, and the women play at    The College of The Bahamas grounds.   The Youth League have games for the 5 to 13 year olds from October to January, games for the Intermediate League 14 to 18 year olds from February to May.   For more information please Tel. January:   From December to January 15: The Carnival continues at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre.   There will be rides, games and prizes for adults and children of all ages.   Times are Monday to Friday 5:00 pm to midnight, Saturday and Sunday 3:00 pm to midnight and Holidays 1:00 pm to midnight. Admissions are Adults $3.00 and children $1.00.

 

December 31: New Years Eve: Most of the Churches in New Providence (of all denominations) Celebrate Midnight Mass to “bring in” the New Year.

 

January 1:   This Tuesday will be celebrated as The New Years Day Holiday.

 

January 1: New Year’s Junkanoo Parade: This spectacular parade begins the Bahamian New Year with pulsating drumming, whistles, horns and cowbells. Large groups perform or “rush” in competition for first place in the parade. The groups are made up of children, adult males and females who vie for individual and group prizes in drumming, dance and belling, best costume and best float.   The crowds of spectators sing and dance on the sidelines and bleachers pulling for (encouraging) their favorite group.   The groups are dressed in uniform costumes, large head pieces that all relate to a theme.   Costumes are made out of cardboard and wire with crepe paper glued together to create a design.   Larger and more elaborate costumes or “pieces” can be three dimensional and designed out of Styrofoam.   The Valley Boys, Saxton Super Stars, Roots, One Family, Barabas & the Tribe are some of the major Junkanoo groups that have participated over the years.   The New Year’s Parade begins at 2:00 a.m. instead of the usual 1:00 a.m. in order to accommodate the Midnight church services.   The parade is usually completed at 8:00 a.m. and fans wait for the winners to be announced on the local radio and television stations.   Tickets are in high demand and usually priced between $10.00 and $50.00.   They are available at the Kendal G.L. January 3: Court of Appeal Opening at 10.00am . This Marks the Opening of the Legal Year. The Public is invited to attend this special sitting, dress is Semi Formal.  

 

January 4 : The Judiciary Annual Seminar:  In The Matter of the Official Visit of The Hon. Anthony M. Gleeson, A C Chief Justice of Australia the Judiciary presents its 9th Annual Seminar under the theme “The Role of a Judge in a Representation Democracy” The Seminar will be held at the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa, West Bay Street, starting at 11:30am. January 5: The Judiciary Annual Ball:   In The Matter of the Official Visit of The Hon . Anthony M. Gleeson, A C Chief Justice of Australia.  The Judicature Social Club presents its 9th Annual Gala Ball hosted by The Chief Justices of The Court of Appeal and the Justices of the Supreme Court. January 6: The Annual Red Mass:   For the Judiciary takes place at St. Francis Cathedral on (Catholic) West Hill Street at their 11am regular church service.   At this service The Most Reverend Patrick Pinder gives a “charge” to Judges, Magistrates and Attorney’s who are invited to attend the service.   This service takes place the Sunday before the Opening Of The Supreme Court.

 

January 9: The Opening Of The Supreme Court: Begins with a church service at Christ Church Cathedral at 10:00am This service is attended by members of the Judiciary, who are dressed in traditional wigs and gowns, as well as others in the legal profession.   The one-hour service will be delivered by the Dean of the Cathedral, The Very Rev’d. Patrick L. Adderley. At the completion of the service the members of the Judiciary then line up in order of precedence.   The attorneys line up in order of the number of years as members of the Bahamas Bar in order to process through the streets from the church on to Bay Street to Rawson Square.   At Rawson Square, on the side of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice, dressed in ceremonial traditional garb, inspects a Royal Police Force Guard of Honour and officially opens the quarterly session of The Bahamas Supreme court with the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band providing the music.        

 

January 12 to 13: New Years, All For One Regatta at Montagu Bay : This is an annual C. Class sailing regatta that starts off the sailing season in New Providence. For information please Tel. Rev. P. McPhee (242) 325-4810

February 1: The Cacique Awards This Gala Event Honour Bahamians and others whose products or performance have had a positive impact on the development of the Bahamian tourist product.   The categories for the nominations include the areas of Transportation, Human Resource Development, Nature Tourism, Sports & Leisure, Creative Arts and Handicraft.   The Special Award is for an individual, organization or group that has developed a tourist attraction or facility for the enjoyment of visitors and has done the most to strengthen linkages between tourism and other sectors of the economy.   The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to the person (working or retired) who has made consistently outstanding contributions to the growth of Tourism for twenty years or more.   The Ministers Award is for the person (working or retired) who has exemplified Bahamian hospitality through genuine friendless and concern for our visitors. February 8 to 12: Miami to Nassau Race Week The race begins in Miami on Saturday  and finish at the Western end of Nassau Harbour on Sunday with an evening party at Hurricane Hole.   On Monday the Welcome Party will be held at the Nassau Yacht Club with the Skipper’s meeting for the Nassau races.

 

February 12:  Miami to Nassau Race Week - Tuesday the buoy races take place off the eastern end of New Providence in the area known as Douglas Roads with an evening party at Hurricane Hole Marina. On Wednesday the buoy races will continue and the Awards party in the evening at the Nassau Yacht Club. February 16 & 17: Valentine’s Day Sailing Regatta: is an exciting weekend of championship racing that takes place off Montagu Bay on East Bay Street.   This event is a festive occasion with food vendors selling native Bahamian food on the Montagu Park during the races. February 16: 44th. Annual Heart Ball: is the major fund – raising event for the Sir Victor Sassoon (Bahamas) Heart Foundation.   The foundation underwrites heart surgery for Bahamian Children whose families cannot afford to pay for their medical expenses.   The ball will be held at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Crown Ball Room.   The entertainment will be provided by the Ed Brice Orchestra, Soulful Groovers and the Police Pop Band.   The usual Grand Raffle prize of a Round Trip for two to Great Britain will be drawn as well as other fabulous prizes.   Cocktails are at 7:15pm and dinner at 8:30pm.   Tickets are priced at $200.00 per person. February to April: The E. C. Bethel National Arts Festival Official Opening : The Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture will kick off their nation wide cultural festival of music, drama, dance and Junkanoo with an official opening of their National Arts Festival.   Many of the schools, singing groups, choirs, dance troupes and individuals of different ages participate in their categories that culminate with a final concert featuring the top performers from the different categories.   The final concerts are to be held from   May to July. March 8: The Red Cross Fair: is an afternoon of fun, games carnival rides and entertainment for adults and children.   The fair features international stalls with food, Bahamian and International art and craft with the usual Bahamian foods, cakes, pastries and candies on sale.   Local plants and flowers fruits and vegetables will also be available.

Spring Fling: The Bahamas National Trust: will hold their Spring Fling at the Retreat Gardens, Village Road on Saturday 8th. This family oriented event will feature old time Bahamian games and ring play for the children and seminars on environmental topics such as Bahamian landscaping and gardening for the adults. March 15 & 16:   The Annual International Dog Show & Obedience Trials: will host their show at the Botanical Gardens from 9:00am to 2:00pm.   The event will showcase both local and purebred dogs of all classes participating in may different events. Both adults and children can enter their pets into the different competitions. This event is a treat for both professional dog handlers and the ordinary person who wish to experience and see first hand what beautiful animals we have in The Bahamas and the work of the Kennel club.   The Botanical Gardens are a beautiful setting for an interesting show with a festive family atmosphere. March 21: Good Friday is a Religious Public Holiday: that marks the end of the Lenten Season on the Friday before Easter Sunday.   It is the first day of a long holiday weekend which includes the following Monday after Easter Sunday.   On this holy day most Bahamian attend church services and serve fish as their main meal of the day.

 

March 24: Easter Monday: holiday marks the beginning of the Beach Picnicking season for Bahamians. There are also many cookouts in the Public Parks by the waterfront and regattas that are going on in the Family Islands. Those persons wishing to travel to a Family Island by boat may contact the Potters Cay dock master at Tel. (242) 393-1064 for times of departures.  

 

March 25 to 29:   The Bahamas National Youth Choir:  presents their annual

Bahamian cultural show of music and dance with a mixture of classical, gospel, secular, original and old Bahamian songs performed by about 30 talented young Bahamian performers.   The atmosphere changes with the changing scenes with performances in uniforms and bright colourful costumes. The first half of the concert is presented in a formal setting with classical or gospel music conducted by the renowned Bahamian musician and composer Mr. Cleophas Adderley.   After the formal renditions the show takes on a lighter air with modern and upbeat selections and dancing in uniform style costumes. In the second half of the concert the performances change into colourful native dress and perform lively ethnic songs and dance with Caribbean, African and Bahamian

March 28: Texaco 7th Annual Safety Speech Contest:    This annual event has become very popular as High School Students take part in the Road Safety speech contest. May 10: The Cancer Society of The Bahamas Annual Ball: this annual fundraiser for the Cancer Society is held under the patronage of sir Orville & Lady Turnquest.    Cocktail Reception begins at 7:15 pm during which time an awards ceremony takes place..   Dinner and dancing begins at 8:15 pm. The Ball is the main fundraiser for the Cancer Society charitable works and outreach programs and the Cancer Caring Center in Nassau.    Tickets are $125.00 per person and the ball will be held at the Radisson Cable Beach & Golf Resort at Cable Beach.. May 12:   Whit Monday a Public Holiday:   This holiday marks the beginning of public witness of the Christian Church and is the Monday after Whit Sunday, The Feast of Pentecost, which comes 50 days after Easter.

June 2008:

 

June 6: Labour Day a Public Holiday :   On this Holiday members of the Labour Unions from different organizations as well as Political Parties march in a large parade through the streets of Downtown Nassau, usually in colourful uniforms, beginning around 10:00 am. Local bands and a few junkanooers, provide lively music for the marchers as well as spectators, lead the parades. The parade ends at the Southern Recreation Grounds where Union Leaders and Local Politicians deliver their speeches.   Most Bahamians then spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing or visiting the beaches.

 

June to July: Junkanoo Summer Festival is held at Arawak Cay Cultural Park every Saturday in June from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.   There is a celebration of Bahamian food, craft demonstrations, story telling, special children’s activities, live entertainment and Junkanoo parades.   For information please contact the Ministry of Tourism at Tel. June: The Bahamas Rotary Tuna Classic, Fifth Annual Tournament will be held at Hurricane Hole Marina, Paradise Island.   The event will feature prizes and a   grand trophy for the largest tuna.   For more information please Tel. (242) 394-9980 or (242) 357-7524

June to August: Police Summer Youth Camp Program will be held at different public parks throughout New Providence and the Family Islands.   The Community Policing division of the Royal Bahamas Police Force coordinates this program. For information please Tel. (242) 323-3435

 

June to August:   The Ministry of Youth Sports & Culture conduct several youth summer programs that include art & craft, different sports programs including: swimming, baseball and basketball.   The National Dance School has a dance workshop with classes in drumming that attracts mostly males and ethnic, classical and modern dance that attracts mostly females.
