Nassau, Bahamas - Over 450 sailors are gearing up for the Best Of The Best Regatta, a much-anticipated event for locals and international fans.

The sailing event will be held at Montagu Bay from December 6 through 9 and will feature races of the A, B and C-class boats.

Boaters prepare year-round for the event, as officials are looking to reinforce sloop sailing as the national sport of The Islands Of The Bahamas.

Boat Captain Richard Ross of San Salvador, who is participating in the C-class race, said he and his boat – The San Sally – are ready for some fierce competition.

“I’m very much excited,” he said. “I’m ready to go right now. I’m the only one who is ready at this point and my boat is ready to go. I know we are going to have some good competition out there. Long Island is coming out strong but I am going to defend myself.”

“I sailed in every regatta this year and this is the biggest one. I really want to do this to put San Salvador on the map.”

Stephano Kemp, who will be racing in the B-class with Queen Trucilla, said he and his crew are excited about the event.

“Every day we are getting hyped up and practicing different strategies. We are doing a lot of preparation every day. It is very important because we want to do this for King Eric because he was the man who taught me everything and so it would mean a lot for us to come out on top,” he said.

Entertainment is also a major component of the Best Of The Best Regatta.

Throughout the day, there will be 24 vendors serving succulent Bahamian dishes and there will be a kiddie corner featuring face painting, characters, a magic man, a bouncing castle and Santa Claus will be coming to town.

At night, the site will come alive with performances by Geno D; Veronica Bishop; KB; Lady E; Qupid; the Rhythm Band; Ira Storr and the Spank Band and the Shadow Band, among others.

There will also be Junkanoo performances every night from Genesis, the Valley Boys and the Saxons Superstars.

Angelique McKay, who is the entertainment coordinator of the event, said the entertainment is going to be spellbinding from start to finish.

“Bahamian entertainment for the Best Of The Best Regatta is very important because it gives us an opportunity to continue to highlight and showcase the entertainers in the country,” she said. “Regatta sloop sailing is very important to The Bahamas as well and so we are just combining everything.”
