Airline aims to increase number of visitors travelling from Baltimore

Baltimore, Maryland: Southwest Airlines launched its international flight to Nassau, Bahamas on Tuesday, July 1 with a Caribbean themed celebration.

Passengers on Southwest’s first flight to Nassau were treated to a taste of The Bahamas from the moment they checked in at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to the time the inaugural flight took off.

The ticket counters were decorated with mini Bahamian flags, beach pails, and beach balls. The sounds of the Caribbean filled the departure gates terminal as a steel drum musician played popular Caribbean ballads.

An officer of the Royal Bahamas Police Force in full regalia greeted passengers as they boarded the aircraft at gate A3. 135 passengers were on board inaugural flight.

Passengers joined in the celebration of the launch with their own commemorative beach balls, snorkels and masks that were handed out on the aircraft. Southwest flight 1857 left BWI on time at 1:35pm.

Southwest took over the non-stop Baltimore to Nassau route of its subsidiary, AirTran Airways. The airline also launched its Oranjestad, Aruba, and Montego Bay, Jamaica routes.

Vice President of Southwest Airlines Ground Operations Jack Smith said the airline is “bringing something new to the market,” stating that the aim is to increase the traffic from Baltimore to Nassau.

During a press conference at BWI, Southwest’s Senior Vice President of Customers, Teresa Laraba said the hope is to increase the number of passengers flying into the international destinations with special travel packages, and minimum fees.

“Thousands of our employees have had a hand in launching today’s flights which begin to bring our convenient and affordable way of air travel to the world, and broaden the horizon for more than 100 million customers who fly with us each year,” said Laraba.

“We’ve grown through four decades of profitable service to carry more domestic air travelers every day than any other airline, and this next chapter plants a flag for Bags Fly Free and No Charge Fees in foreign sand.”

Southwest Vacations is offering up to $200 off of select travel packages booked through July 14, 2014 featuring combinations of air, hotel, car, and activities.
