With just days before Bahamian golfers tee off against their Caribbean counterparts, President of the Bahamas Golf Federation Glen Archer said the local team is "brimming with confidence" and predicted that The Bahamas will dominate the upcoming regional competition.

The 60th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships is set to kick off on Monday at One and Only Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island.

Golfers from Jamaica, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico are participating.

Archer said the 10-member team's home course advantage couldn't have come at a better time.

"We are brimming with confidence," Archer said.

"I feel that we are in a very good position to win, not only just to be good contenders but to win. The team has been practicing very diligently.

"They feel that they are more prepared than ever. That's the beauty of having the home court advantage. So in that sense we, the team, the coaches and are staff, are all feeling upbeat."

Taneka Sandiford, a veteran on the team, said this will be the first time she will play in front of the home crowd.

"It's unbelievable," she said.

"This is my 14th time playing on the national team and I've never played in Nassau. It's great to be home.

"It's great that we get to host in The Bahamas."

Approximately 90 golfers will participate in the competition, which will end next Friday.

The event is expected to draw scores of regional golf enthusiasts and supporters in addition to domestic travelers.

"We have followers and players coming out of Freeport, Grand Bahama and like I said earlier the membership of the Bahamas Golf Federation is made up of with members from the various islands and so that's our local tourism," Team Manager Agatha Delancy said.

"But we'll have a serious contingent of our followers coming from throughout the Caribbean."

Delancy and Archer encouraged locals to come out and support the team. There is no charge to watch the championships. Free parking is also available.

The Bahamian contingent will consist of six men, competing for the Herman Cup for regular golfers and four women, who will compete for the George Teale Cup.

The last time The Bahamas won the golf championships was back in 2000 in Barbados.

Archer said The Bahamas is looking to reemerge as a dominant force in golf.
During the opening ceremony for the championships on Monday night, Bahamian golfer Fred Higgs will be inducted into the Caribbean Golf Association (CGA) Hall of Fame. Additionally, Peter Hall and Ambrose Gouthro will be recognized by the CGA.
The ceremony, which is open to invited guests, will take place on at One and Only Ocean Club. The full tournament schedule is listed below.
