NASSAU, The Bahamas – International choirs have joined with Bahamian national choirs to create a week of music of the Americas radiating from Nassau city churches, and The College of The Bahamas from Sunday, August 21 through August 30. It is a unique festival of song, free of charge. Minister of Tourism the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe welcomed the choirs to this Bahamas International Choral Festival at an Opening Ceremony on Sunday at Atlantis, Paradise Island.

The choir participants are young people of the Americas, from the north, Canada, through warmer climes. Concerts take place at mid-day at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Kirk, St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Zion Baptist Church, and Trinity Methodist Church. There is also a recital at The College of The Bahamas Performing Arts Centre. Trinity is hosting several evening concerts throughout, to the end of the month.

The extraordinary production – “America Cantat 8/Bahamas International Choral Festival” is the result of a partnership of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism with the America Cantat Organization and the American Choral Directors Association.

America Cantat is a premier cultural music festival of the Americas, and is the only noncompetitive choir festival to unite singers, conductors, and festival choirs from North, Central, and South America in a ten-day cultural and musical immersion program.

The Festival began in 1992 in Argentina as part of the Columbus Quincentennial. It continues to unite people of different countries in a celebration of choral artistry and cultural exchange. America Cantat is modeled after sister festival, Europa Cantat; and in conjunction with Africa Cantat and Asia Pacific Cantat, they comprise a movement toward worldwide peace.
