The Bahamas - Wing Span Productions, a UK film production company was in Nassau filming a documentary for BBC in Nassau during May, 2009.
The project was based on a very high profile meeting with took place in Lyford Cay in 1962 at a private residence called Bali Hai. At the historic meeting in '62 was US President, John F. Kennedy, British Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan and Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker.
The talks focused on the placement of nuclear missels in Cuba.
Wingspan interviewed a number of Bahamians who worked at Bali Hai at the time, persons who might have heard some snippets of the talks. It was said that Kennedy and MacMillan walked the beach of Bali Hai where they engaged in private talks about the Cuban incident.
BBC enlisted the support Sir Christopher Mayer, a former British diplomat and expert on nuclear arms negotiations during that era; he was accompanied to Nassau by his wife Lady Catherine Mayer.
Nick Boy, Production Manager for Wingspan Productions comments on their filming experience in The Bahamas,
"Our filming in Nassau was a great success, largely because of the excellent advice and assistance we received from Craig, Angela and the rest of the Film Commission team. Their help with tracking down potential contributors and arranging locations before we arrived was invaluable and the process of arranging customs documents and filming permissions couldn’t be easier. The only downside was the weather – pouring rain for most of our shoot – but we didn’t expect the Film Commission to be able to fix that!"
The BBC project's working title is "Diplomacy" but may be changed as it gets closer to the release date of October or November 2009.
