The College of The Bahamas wishes to announce the appointment of Dr. Mychal Colemanas the Chief Human Resources Officer, effective September 26th, 2016 for a period of three years.

Dr. Coleman will lead and coordinate the recruitment, selection, assignment, orientation and evaluation of administrators, faculty and staff; ensure compliance with policies, procedures, contracts and collective bargaining agreements and develop and implement training programmes to increase productivity, goal attainment, leadership training and development. He will also formulate with key stakeholders long- and short-range human resource departmental goals, including the creation and implementation of a strategic plan and other planning documents and processes to improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the institution.

Dr. Coleman has extensive experience in transforming human resources departments and building strategic partnerships. His corporate experience includes designing innovative post-merger integration HR solutions, implementing cooperative learning and change management interventions, and developing competencies-based compensation plans and organization-wide strategic initiatives.

While serving as the AVP of Human Resources at the College of Southern Maryland, Dr. Coleman led the redesign and transformation of the HR business model. The result of this effort was an award-winning publication (CUPA, 2016) and winning the most innovative HR initiatives and excellence award (AWE, 2016). At the Carlson School of Management, he developed “Fuse Management”, while collaborating with academic business units and departments to implement lean continuous improvement, talent development, on-boarding, and strategic repositioning techniques. These tactical objectives created collective movement toward the School’s strategic objectives.

As Assistant VP of Human Resources at the University of Idaho, Dr. Coleman aligned HR strategic goals with university priorities, transformed the HR business model, and improved customer service. He reduced response times by establishing a HR service center, decreased the hiring cycle by reengineering the process, increased productivity by instituting continuous improvements in HR transactional processes, and facilitated organizational effectiveness by creating a change management (OD) unit.

During his tenue as the AVP for the Center for Strategic Initiatives & Continuous Improvement, his primary task was engaging senior leadership in achieving the overarching strategic goals of delivering a university-wide continuous improvement program, talent management, and aligning academic and administrative strategic objectives. As a Sr. Consultant, he developed an employee life cycle system consisting of vision/mission socialization, talent management, performance management, organizational learning, and leadership development.

Dr. Coleman earned a Master’s degree in Industrial Relations/Human Resources Development from the University of Minnesota and later earned a doctorate degree in Organizational Development from the University of St. Thomas.

He has taught courses on organizational behavior and change, HR management, and strategic planning. He has published in a variety of journals including the Journal of the Organization Development Network, SAHRM, Journal for Quality & Participation and HR Management.

Dr. Coleman’s human resources expertise will be an invaluable asset to the College of The Bahamas, scheduled to formally become the University of The Bahamas on November 10th, 2016, which is in an era of unprecedented growth and development.

Dr. Coleman is married to Dr. Michelle Bettin and has a 16-year-old daughter residing in Plymouth, Minnesota.
