Atlantis, Paradise Island recently joined with top water safety and training organizations the world over to host the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) – a campaign to spread awareness about the importance of learning to swim, particularly where children are concerned, to help prevent drowning.

Learning to swim and how to be safe around water are truly matters of life and death for both children and adults around the world. According to the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is major public health problem worldwide and is the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death. It is one of the top five causes of death for people aged one – 14 years old for 48 of 85 countries where drowning is tracked.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson was created as a platform to communicate that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™and provides an unprecedented opportunity to work with the media to convey that loss of life from drowning can be prevented through awareness and training. Since its inception in 2010, the WLSL event has helped spread the Swimming Lessons Save Lives™ message to more than 600 million people around the globe through media impressions.

The event held at Atlantis’ Royal Bath Pool provided the opportunity for the resort’s Water Safety Trainers to not only spread the word to guests, but to interact with children from the local community as well. Youngsters identified by the Urban Renewal Department visited the resort for an all-important yet fun lesson in the basics of swimming. They were joined by children and adults staying at the resort.
