Nassau, The Bahamas Thousands of members of the Haitian community in New Providence observed Haiti’s Flag Day on Saturday passed. BTC partnered with the Haitian Community as the Title Sponsor for the day’s activities. Special guests attending the event included the Haitian Ambassador, Miss Haiti and former Miss World. CEO Leon Williams spoke to the crowd. “BTC built the first submarine fiber optic cable in Haiti, connecting them to the rest of the world. BTC is here to support the Haitian community in all of their endeavors and not just on Flag Day. We are a partner for life,” said Williams. H.E. Jean Victor Geneus, Ambassador to Haiti said, “This is a very important gesture. It shows how close BTC is to the Haitian community. BTC has been with the community from the beginning. They are still with the community and we believe that in the future, BTC will be here too. So, we pay tribute to this friendship and support from BTC to the Haitian community.”
Miss Haiti and first runner up for Miss Universe, Raquel Pelissier also attended the event. Pelisser said, “It is really important because many Haitians live abroad and it’s important that they are proud to know where they are from. I feel it’s great that BTC gives Haitian Flag Day so much support.” Former Miss World Bahamas, Chantal O’Brien also attend the event and commented, "I am very happy that BTC decided to do something like this. It shows that there is a lot of support especially for the Haitian community. We know that Haitians contribute a lot to the economy here in The Bahamas, so I feel like BTC's decision to take this up was a really good idea and I think that the Haitian community can appreciate being able to call home and keep in touch.” Chief Marketing Officer, Janet Brown, addressed the audience in creole, assuring them of BTC’s dedicated efforts to meet their telecommunications needs. “We want to ensure that the needs of all of our customers are met - not just one specific group or ethnicity,” said Brown. As a part of its sponsorship, BTC reduced the calling rate between The Bahamas and Haiti. Last year, BTC opened its first creole speaking store on Carmichael Road. Earlier this year, the company also introduced Creole as a language option on its platform. Recently, BTC also partnered with over thirty Haitian churches in New Providence to raise funds for a community destroyed by fire. BTC will also sponsor the Haitian Flag Day celebration in Abaco this weekend.
