Nassau, Bahamas - Hurricane Matthew may have hampered Bahamian Chef Sheldon Sweeting's preparation for the 2016 Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, but the challenges brought on by the category four hurricane were not enough to stop the top chef from receiving silver and bronze honours at the epic culinary showdown.

Chef Sweeting and Chef Ron Johnson recently traveled to Germany, just weeks after the hurricane, to represent The Bahamas in the six-day event. This year's competition marked the second individual showing and fourth overall appearance for Chef Sweeting. For Chef Johnson - who received a certificate of participation - it was the first appearance at the international competition.

REV sponsored both chefs, providing funds to help the team cover the cost of airfare, transportation, accommodations, practice ingredients and materials.

According to Chef Sweeting, this assistance played a key role in their preparation during those difficult days after Hurricane Matthew.

"Prior to Hurricane Matthew hitting us, I went to Florida to shop for seafood and other items I needed," Chef Sweeting said. "Because there was no power for almost nine to ten days, I had to throw away everything that I bought.

"The donation from Cable Bahamas made it easier to get the equipment and food I needed without having to wonder where the next dollar would come from. I think that helped us to pull through the devastation of Matthew."

REV's sponsorship of the Culinary Olympics team came some four months after the communications company supported the duo and fellow members of the Bahamas National Culinary Team in South Florida's Taste of the Caribbean showdown.

"When we first learned that the Culinary Olympics existed and that members of the Bahamas National Culinary Team were competing, it was a no brainer for us," REV Marketing Manager Melissa Baker said. "Food is a vital aspect of Bahamian culture and our national culinary team continues to take Bahamian cuisine to the next level with their extraordinary skill and creativity. We are so impressed and proud of our culinary ambassadors."

The 2016 Culinary Olympics featured over 2,000 of the world's top chefs in an epic showdown of culinary prowess. National teams, private teams and individual competitors from 59 nations participated in the competition, which comprises virtually every area of gastronomy, from hot and cold cuisine to pastries, gelato, and even decorative food art.

Prior to this year's contest, Chef Sweeting competed in the Culinary Olympics as a member of Team Bahamas in 2004 and 2008 and entered the individual category in 2012. He received bronze medal awards for each of these appearances.
