Nassau, Bahamas - Despite the noise in the marketplace, the citizens of the Republic of China are friends to The Bahamas, president of The Bahamas China Friendship Association, Anthony Capron said.

“They are friends with whom we have in the past enjoyed many wonderful occasions. This year will mark 20 years of diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the People’s Republic of China,” Mr. Capron said during festivities celebrating the 2017 Chinese Spring Festival hosted by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to The Commonwealth of The Bahamas His Excellency Huang Qinguo and Madame Zheng Chuncao at the British Colonial Hilton, Thursday, January 19, 2017.

“Twenty years of mutual respect and trust, a relationship that has formed the basis of some genuine friendships, and for some, perhaps even love,” The Bahamas China Friendship Association President added.

This period of the new year, which is known as the Spring Festival, lasts for 15 days and is the longest holiday period in China. It is a special time because it affords the population the luxury of travelling long distances and to spend quality time with family members that are not often seen, he said.

“I dare say that if we in The Bahamas were given 15 consecutive days for a national holiday period, many of us may not feel like going back to work. And some of us may not go back.

“Can you imagine 15 days straight of Junkanoo parades?”

Mr. Capron said it is interesting what the President of the Republic of China, Xi Jinping had to say a few weeks ago, in his New Year’s address to welcome in 2017. “He said the new moves on from the old every day without fail. He said the ‘Pie doesn’t fall from the sky and only hard efforts will make dreams come true’.”

Mr. Capron explained that there is a lesson in that to be learned because what the President of the Republic of China said is nothing new, and the Bible clearly states that “By the sweat of his brow, man shall eat bread”.

“So, what President Xi was saying is that we must work for what we want. Simply put, that means that nothing will be given to us.”

Mr. Capron said President Xi also expressed the sentiment that China believes everyone belongs to one family in a united world, and that the Chinese people not only hope for a good life for themselves, but also wish it for people in other countries.

“It is no secret that that is also the wish of the Bahamian people. And that is seen every day by the thousands of visitors who come to these islands, who are greeted by the smiling and welcoming faces of a kindly and hospitable people,” Mr. Capron said.

“Yes, in that, we are one with the Chinese people.

“The Bahamian people were hoping that, at this point, in time, we would be enjoying the amenities of a completed an operational Baha Mar resort. But, setbacks notwithstanding, the Bahamian people, continue to share in Prime Minister Perry Christie’s optimism that those hotels and casino on Cable Beach will soon be completed and opened to the public and to the world.

“And we certainly applaud the Prime Minister’s untiring efforts to bring about that fulfillment,” The Bahamas China Friendship Association President said.
