Nassau, The Bahamas - While many adults are still trying to make ends meet in the unstable Bahamian economy, this weekend, a group of aspiring child entrepreneurs will be launching their businesses at the second annual Kids Only Garage Sale and Ultimate Kids Money Show. The event is set for 10am to 4pm this Saturday at Arawak Cay.

The show is endorsed by the Ministry of Educational and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and sponsored by Scotiabank, Family Guardian, GEMS Radio and Bahamas Virtual Mall.

“The goal is to empower the next generation to be entrepreneurs, savers and investors in a practical way yet fun way,” says organizer of the event and founder of Creative Wealth Keshelle Kerr. “Last year, we had great time with kids renting booths for as little as $50 and walking away with almost $300 or $400 based on the items they sold. Some kids sold treats they made, others sold toys, games and books they no longer wanted and still others sold clothes. Many of them actually continued their businesses. This show empowers kids with the ability to make their own money from the stuff that they own at home. Parents are also impressed because they get to take part in the financial literacy activities we have as they help teach the basics of balancing budgets and wealth management.”

Kerr says the timing of the show couldn’t be better as many of the kids are eager to earn their own funds for Christmas to buy presents or save for something they want.

“The whole thing is designed to develop the entrepreneurial spirit in children in a practical way,” noted Kerr. “It will not only to teach them unique ways to earn money but also inspire them to save and manage their money wisely. The most enjoyable aspect was the fact that they were able to run their businesses for the day and that a seed was planted in the life of a future CEO. At my workshops, I often tell kids that they are the CEO’s of their own lives and this gives them an opportunity to get their feet wet.”

Participants at this year’s show include children age 6 to 16, several youth groups and school groups raising funds plus companies promoting kid-friendly products. In addition to fun games, face painting and bouncing castles, musician and puppeteer Derek and Charlie the Yellow Bahamian will entertain live.
