The Board of Directors of Doctors Hospital Health System has selected Dr Charles Diggiss as President. The appointment follows the recent retirement of President Barry Rassin. In addition, Dr Diggiss will continue to serve as Chief Medical Officer, a position he has held since 2002. As President and CMO, Dr Diggiss will spearhead the development of Doctors Hospital Health System’s vision, growth and expansion, new clinical program and innovative service development and take the lead in cultivating relationships with strategic partners, both locally and internationally, as well as retain oversight for the hospital’s medical staff and patient care concerns. In this new role, he will report to the Board of Directors and continue to work alongside Chief Executive Officer, Charles Sealy II and the Executive Team. “Dr Diggiss has been an integral part of Doctors Hospital’s growth and success, not only as a leading surgeon, but also as a member of our Executive Team and as a member of the Board of Directors. This experience in both the clinical and administrative aspects of the organization makes him the ideal candidate to help navigate the continued development of Doctors Hospital as the leading private health care provider in The Bahamas,” said Charles Sealy, CEO. Dr Diggiss joined the Doctors Hospital Health System in 1983 as a physician on the overnight shift. In the more than 30 years since, he has introduced advanced technologies in surgery, established the organisation’s Medical Staff, formalised the Risk Management program and developed the hospital’s Emergency Medical Services department. In 1994 he spearheaded the introduction of laparoscopic general surgery to Doctors Hospital and the Bahamas. In 1995, he joined the Board of Directors and in 1996 stepped up to provide physician leadership at the hospital. This role was formalized in 2002, making him the hospital’s first Chief Medical Officer. In his capacity as CMO, Dr Diggiss was instrumental in helping to lead Doctors Hospital to become the first acute care hospital in the Caribbean region to achieve Joint Commission International accreditation in 2009 and later, to transition to compete e-documentation by the Medical Staff in 2013. Dr Diggiss is excited about the opportunities and challenges his newest role affords. “One of my favorite quotes is ‘opportunity advantages those who are best prepared,’ and what I see as a strong part of my role is preparing the Doctors Hospital Health System for explosive growth in the immediate future,” said Dr Diggiss. Doctors Hospital Health System has provided Bahamians with quality private health care for more than half a century. The organization includes Doctors Hospital, a 72-bed acute care hospital, as well as Bahamas Medical Center in western New Providence.
