Nassau, Bahamas - PHA officials and members of the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre’s Administration team welcomed His Excellency Huang Qinguo, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, to the institution in Fox Hill on Friday October 21st, 2016 for an official handover ceremony of donated construction materials.  The materials will assist with the construction of gazebos on the Sandilands Campus as part of the Therapeutic Environment Project (TEP), an on-going initiative at Sandilands to transform the extensive grounds.
The presentation was made by Ambassador Huang, who toured the proposed site for the gazebos.  The donation by the Embassy is valued at nineteen thousand, two hundred twenty one dollars ($19, 221.00).  The contribution of materials to construct the Gazebos for this project will assist in completing Phase II of the Therapeutic Environment Project which is located at the front lawn of the Cruikshank Ward.  PHA Chairman, Senator the Honourable Frank E. Smith, noted that the Therapeutic Environment Project is designed to “enhance the therapeutic milieu and create an attractive landscape feature, promote stigma eradication… and promote socialization, relaxation and healing in nature.”

The Late Adrella Gibson, a psychiatric nurse at Sandilands was credited with inspiring the Theraputic Environmental Project.  Chairman Smith said, “Sister Gibson was passionate about the fact that the exterior components of clinical care were being overlooked.  She realized that without these vital yet simple components, the essence of rehabilitation would not be appreciated and the differentiation in specialty not respected.”  Phase one of the project, the creation of a therapeutic space at the roundabout at the entrance to the psychiatric hospital was named “Drella’s Dream” in her honour early last year.
