Fire in Nassau destroys historical sites

A massive fire impacting the downtown area, destroying the old straw market site totally destroying not only all goods stored under the makeshift tent, but also ALL of the artifacts in the adjacent Pompey Museum.

The fire reportedly started sometime around 3am and quickly spread throughout, thanks in part to wind. Officials of the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Fire Service Division are on the scene and have the situation under control.

The Pompey Museum officials telling News that this is the 2nd fire to impact the museum with this fire being the most impactful resulting in a number of historical artifacts and collections being destroyed.

The building to the immediate west of the old straw market site has also been significantly impacted. That building housed popular nightclub “Da Balcony”, a liquor store and a souvenir shop. Nearby businesses and buildings were also significantly impacted by smoke.

Government and opposition officials are on the scene assessing the situation.
This fire comes a decade after a massive fire destroyed the straw market only a stone’s throw away. It also comes at a time when a number of cruise ships are in port...
