NASSAU, The Bahamas – The National Emergency Management Agency has, effectively immediately, designated the Kendal G L Isaacs Gymnasium in the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre as a shelter for residents who would have to evacuate their homes, due to the raging fire at the public landfill (city dump).

Those residents being impacted live in Jubilee Gardens, Victoria Gardens and surrounding communities.

Social Workers and members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force are serving as shelter managers. Residents are being urged to take advantage of the services being offered, until authorities deem it is safe to return to their homes.

The gym can accommodate about 400 people. It was also used as a shelter during Hurricane Mathew last October.

Also, other residents and curious onlookers are being strongly urged to avoid the area, as much as possible.

NEMA will continue to provide updates on the situation.
