Nassau, Bahamas - In order to accommodate families impacted by Hurricane Matthew, Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) has extended its admissions application deadline to Friday 3 February 2017.

LCIS is a fully accredited international school located in western New Providence offering a prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. Upon graduation, LCIS students move on to top colleges and universities around the world, including Ivy League institutions.

The Early Learning Centre (ELC) at LCIS has for many decades offered a one-of-a-kind learning experience for children from ages 3 to 5. In addition to college-ready young adults, LCIS produces early learners who are not only academically and technologically advanced, but are thoughtful about the world around them. The curriculum in the ELC is deeply rooted in the key IB principles of caring for one’s community and international mindedness.

Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator at LCIS Mrs Yochabel De Giorgio sheds light on the importance of early learning, stating, “The early years are key to students’ success. The IB’s programme for Preschool and Elementary school, or PYP, lays a wonderful foundation for LCIS students, as it is inquiry- and concept-based. Our students inquire into world issues as well as local issues. The PYP is a vital stepping stone and prepares our students for the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). All three programmes build upon one another to create internationally minded, global citizens.”

In these early years, it is extremely important that children are taught by teachers who are professionally trained and passionate about their students’ success. With a low teacher-student ratio of 1:7, LCIS students are afforded one-on-one attention in the classroom. Mrs De Giorgio shares that “every teacher in the Early Learning Centre is sent to specific training that helps them become experts in their discipline. Examples of this training are Play-Based Learning and Assessment in the Early Years.” Her mention of Play-Based Learning also brings focus to the importance that LCIS places on ensuring that learning is fun for children in these early years. LCIS teachers are experts in this practice, which allows young students to develop a joy for learning that will be lifelong.

It is now widely accepted that children’s foundational years, ages 3-5, are pivotal to their long-term educational success. In these years, children experience an incredible amount of brain development, as they absorb a wealth of knowledge from the world around them. With this in mind, most Bahamian families opt to enrol their children in early learning programmes to ensure that they meet key developmental milestones. However, many parents are unaware of the differences in quality between the programmes available, as well as the implications these differences may have on their children’s long-term intellectual development. In a rapidly changing world, it is critical that parents ensure that their children are receiving the best education available and are being exposed to different cultures and global issues.

Additionally, with its location in the secure, gated community of Lyford Cay in western New Providence, LCIS’ facilities are world-class and safe. While fundraising is underway for a new state-of-the-art Upper School campus, LCIS has also committed to enhancing its current campus, which will eventually become solely its Early Learning Centre and Elementary School. The current campus boasts well-appointed classrooms, a 25m swimming pool, basketball courts and playing field. Students in the Early Learning Centre also benefit from one-to-one iPads, desktop computers in every classroom and MacBook Airs which are available for additional support. The school also plans to add a Nursery facility for children aged as young as 2 years.

There are 45 nationalities represented at LCIS and 15 languages spoken. Still, the school has a strong local representation, with 40% of the community being Bahamian. A well-established financial aid and scholarship programme ensures that many more Bahamian students can benefit from a high-quality, international education.
