Nassau, Bahamas - Around fifty people gathered at Southern Recreation Grounds on Friday,
October 14th for a Rally and March to commemorate National Heroes' Day
instead of Christopher Columbus' Discovery Day. As the group marched
pass the Governor General's House where Columbus' statute is erected
they chanted "Fe-Fi-Fo! Columbus Got to Go!", "National Heroes, Big Dem
Up!" and "No Justice! No Peace!" The marchers also chanted the names of
Heroes like C. R. Walker, Mable Walker, A. F. Adderley, Marcus Garvey,
Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Haile Selassie and many others.
The organizers of the march - the Africans United Coalition- said
that their aim was to expose Columbus' murderous legacy that initiated
the genocide of the Lucayos, the natives people of these islands, and
his role in building up the exploitative capitalist social system. The
organizers also wanted to lift up African men and women who have fought
for real freedom for all people.
