Nassau,  Bahamas - The public is advised that at approximately 5:40 a.m. this morning (December 13) Prison inmate Dorion Armbrister, 28, escaped for a brief period via a bathroom window at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Armbrister, who was hospitalised on Monday, December 12, was serving a 27-month sentence for stealing from a shop.

Preliminary reports indicate that Armbrister, who was under 24-hour guard by a Prison Officer, was permitted to use the restroom but used the opportunity to make good his escape by jumping through the window despite being outfitted with leg restraints. He was captured at 6:05 a.m. (25 minutes after the escape) by the Prison Officer who was forced to shoot him after being confronted by the inmate with a blunt, wooden object. Armbrister's injury is not deemed to be life threatening.

The Superintendent of Prison has ordered a full investigation into the matter.
