Jamaal Rolle, known as The Celebrity Artist attended the Global Publishers Expo that was held at the end of April 2017 by Scholar Books, in partnership with U.S.-based Thomson-Shore, one of the world’s largest book manufacturers and distributors.

“We have created something that has not been done in The Bahamas before,” said Albert Cox, CEO of Scholar Books. “Authors don’t have to self-publish or take on the burden of financial expenses or headache of distribution.  We will do it for them.”

Cox said that there is a distinct difference between a self-publisher and a traditional book publisher. “We provide a full authorship agreement with the investment coming from our publishing house, rather than from the author,” he said. Scholar Books works from concept to completion and allows for work to be sold online, or from bookshelves around the world.

Kevin Spall, CEO of Thomson-Shore and Jerry Friends, Director of Distribution and Sales were also keynote speakers at the Expo. They spoke about their global connections and how it worked.

“Scholar Books is moving Bahamian literature onto the world stage starting with a list of titles this Fall; books that were authored by some amazing people of The Bahamas,” said Spall. “The individual tales of courage and perseverance is inspiring, and some of the historical events that have been captured by written words for the first time, marks a coming of age for Bahamian literature.”

Jerry Friends who is the Director of Distribution and Sales for Thomson-Shore and Scholar Books added, “There are many ways sales and distribution can be organized, and we are here to assist Bahamian authors. There is a lot of quality work being produced by local writers as well as by Scholar Books, and we are happy to be part of the process.”

Dr Desiree Cox, the first Bahamian Rhodes Scholar said, “I was looking forward to having access to such an institution in The Bahamas for a long time. I am excited to have my work produced by Scholar Books. They add another positive dynamic to our country.”

Bahamian celebrity artist, Jamaal Rolle agreed. “I found the Expo informative and engaging. I was pleased to learn about the depths of accessibility and the possibilities. The fact that this is a global company founded by a Bahamian, and a company that can grant greater opportunity for us, is beyond the status quo. I look forward to working with this institution.”

Scholar Books organizes and develops an estimated 500 book titles and contents per month with a total of 6,000 book titles and contents per year, with a expected expansion of books to hit 50,000 book titles and contents. To date, they have the highest production scale of any book-publishing house in the country. The company currently preparing a new two story corporate office for the Fall, along with added offices throughout different parts of the world.

“We are not only a country of sun, sand and sea. We are also a country of intellectuals, free thinkers, and knowledge seekers. Our knowledge has been untapped and undervalued for far too long and that is slowly changing,” said Scholar’s CEO, Albert Cox.
