Look up in the sky—Is it a bird? No, it’s a crane!
Nassau, Bahamas - The crane you see some 300+ feet in the air is part of the new skyline at LPIA these days, as work on the new 226,000 sq. ft. International Arrivals Terminal & Pier is progressing steadily at the Lynden Pindling International Airport. Stage two of the $409 million airport redevelopment project began back in March, with selective demolition of the old US Departures terminal.
Nassau Airport Development Company will again partner with Ledcor Construction and its Bahamian affiliate Woselee Construction to complete stage two. Ledcor/Woselee served as general contractor for stage one.
Next fall, passengers arriving at LPIA from an international destination will utilize the $129 million facility. With an aggressive construction timetable, airport officials are reporting an average of 154 workers on site during the initial demolition and construction phase. These numbers are expected to increase to more than 400 during peak periods.
To date, more than $32 million has been awarded to Bahamian firms including sub-contract awards. “This figure represents 27.7% of the total value of construction contracts awarded so far for this stage of the project. We anticipate that the percentage will increase as we confirm the number of Bahamian sub‐contractors working with international firms on the C‐240 contract,” said NAD’s President & CEO Stewart Steeves.
The project is also injecting direct cash into the local economy. In May, NAD spent just under $5 million in Bahamian dollars for local services, bringing the total to $8 million for stage two.
The third and final stage of the airport redevelopment involves the construction of a new Domestic/International Departures and new Domestic Arrivals Terminal at a projected cost of $84 million scheduled to open in the Fall of 2013.
