Nassau, Bahamas - The home sharing community in The Bahamas is a growing component of the local tourism industry. In 2018, Airbnb hosts in The Bahamas welcomed approximately 59,000 guests with an average trip length of approximately 5 days.

These travelers were welcomed by 1,700 hosts who opened their doors to offer locals and foreigners alike a diverse, inclusive and sustainable travel experience in urban destinations such as Nassau, but also on the Family Islands and areas that typically benefit less from tourist visits.

Home sharing democratizes the tourism industry, providing the opportunity for thousands of Bahamians to share their country with guests from all over the world, and benefit directly from it.

Bahamian hosts are a diverse group; sixty-one percent of hosts are female. The average host age is 50, with sixty-eight percent of hosts in The Bahamas between the ages of 30 and 59.

"Undoubtedly, The Bahamas is an important destination in the Caribbean and thanks to Airbnb, and a strong partnership with Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar, more and more local travelers, and travelers from the rest of the world, are able to visit The Bahamas and travel in an authentic way. This sustainable way of traveling generates a positive and significant impact within the country, and helps to economically empower our Bahamian hosts and their communities," said Carlos Munoz, Airbnb Campaign Manager, Public Policy and Communications for The Caribbean and Central America.

In The Bahamas, Airbnb is able to connect travelers to more than 2,900 places to stay throughout the islands. For sharing their home, a typical host* in The Bahamas earned revenues of up to $7,500 USD in the last 12 months. This figure is a sample of how Airbnb allows hosts to become hospitality entrepreneurs by earning extra income, which in many cases allows homeowners to offset expenses and stay in their home.

At the same time, Bahamians also choose Airbnb when traveling. In 2018, there were 17,100 Bahamian guests who stayed at Airbnb listings both in The Bahamas and abroad, eager to experience what it is like to live like a local wherever they travel.

In this way, "Airbnb contributes to the development of the Bahamian tourism sector, which shows great potential for growth in 2019," Munoz concluded.

Airbnb looks forward to building its relationship with The Bahamas to help grow the tourism sector. With its strong partnership with the CTO, Airbnb is steadily working to drive tourism in the region and grow economic opportunity by promoting authentic travel throughout the Caribbean.
