Reaffirms relentless focus on updating legislation

Manhattan, New York - As part of the Real Estate Association’, ongoing strategy and efforts to preserve the integrity of the sector and safeguard the industry for the exclusive operation and composition of Bahamian professionals, the President of Bahamas Real Estate Association (BREA), Mrs. Christine Wallace-Whitfield took the opportunity during her recent visit to New York to enlist the support and assistance of the Bahamian Foreign Service through engagement with the Consulate General of The Bahamas in New York.

Mrs. Wallace-Whitfield advised that in her fifth consecutive term as President of BREA she is unrelenting in her focus on eliminating the pervasive intrusion of real estate agents, brokers and appraisers from foreign jurisdictions imposing and operating inside and outside of The Bahamas in a manner that is evidently illegal and contrary to the laws of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Noting that an important aspect of real estate transactions, namely authentication of signatures for conveyances/documents and serving as first point of contact in respect of real estate related inquiries, are often conducted outside of the shores of The Bahamas and are facilitated through consular services, Mrs. Wallace Whitfield sought to garner the views and assistance of the Consulate and Consul General in what has been determined to be a critical vantage.

Mrs. Wallace Whitfield communicated her intent to present a proposal to her BREA colleagues to give consideration to expanding its network of Strategic Partners to include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in particular, those Foreign Missions of The Bahamas that has portfolio responsibility for consular activities and the critical role of investment promotions.

Consul General Lawrence (Larry) Cartwright apprised Mrs. Wallace Whitfield of the activities of the Consulate and offered some insights into his experiences relative to the industry and explored opportunities for collaboration in the efforts of the Association.

While holding productive discussions and paying a courtesy call on Consul General Cartwright located at Bahama House, in Manhattan, New York, Mrs. Wallace-Whitfield also used the occasion to call on H. E. Chet D. Neymour, Ambassador/ Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the United Nations.
