Tokyo - Deputy Prime Minister of the Bahamas, the Honorable Peter Turnquest has officially opened the Bahamas Maritime Authority’s (BMA) new office at Nishi-Shinbashi in the heart of the Minato district in Tokyo. He was joined by several other VIP guests to celebrate this momentous occasion including the Minister of Transport and Local Government, Renward Wells, both the Chair and Deputy Chair of the BMA, Denise Lewis-Johnson and Peter John Goulandris, as well as Cora Bain-Colebrooke, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Transport & Local Government. Captain Dwain Hutchinson, Acting Managing Director and CEO at the BMA commented: “As the 2nd largest ship owning country of dead-weight tonnage*, we recognise the strategic importance and integral role Japan plays in the global maritime sector. This dedicated office will allow us to enhance our service delivery with exclusive BMA staff who will continue to be supported by our regional Classification Societies and Nautical Inspectors. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with the Japanese maritime cluster through our Tokyo office.”
The Bahamas remains a non-targeted flag from a Port State perspective within the Asia Pacific region and Paris MOU, as well as a US Coast Guard QUALSHIP 21 flag state. This positive performance coupled with The Bahamas being a most favoured nation in relation to ships trading to Chinese ports are beneficial for Japanese ship owners trading regionally and internationally. A representative from MODEC also said: “We would like to extend our warmest congratulations on BMA’s Japan office opening. With BMA’s professional and timely assistance for floating production facilities such as FPSO/FSO, MODEC has been able to deliver the facility on time to our clients. MODEC believes we can establish and develop the great relationship with BMA Japan in the future.”
